Title: GX4000 Serials And Versions
Post by: chinnyhill10 on 20:26, 27 November 17
Have a new GX4000 here (I know, lets count the days until I explode it) and I note it has quite a high serial number. 735-0X66158. Do we know if the serials are linear and therefore do we know the highest number out in the wild so we can work out how many were made?

Also mine has a sticker saying it is 'Version D'. Anyone know what that means?

Chips are dated as late as week 40 1990 (assume console manufacture week 42 at best, 6 weeks on a boat, would arrive in UK week 50). Could this put unit 66158 (again assuming linear numbers) towards the end of the run?

I'd also forgotten that the GX was made in Japan. Any reason for this? Must have been expensive compared to other countries.

Hi Chinny,

That serial does appear to be a very high (probably one of the last) GX.
From what I have noticed, the 'Version' sticker seems to match the mainboard version.
If this is the case, then yours may be a 'MC0123D', and if so, I have never seen one and the wiki mainboard page does not have one either.

http://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/Mainboard_Versions#GX4000

The serial breakdown:  (using the following link as the reference).

http://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/Mainboard_Versions#How_to_Decode_the_CPC_serial_number

735 = Factory code (I beleive all GX have this - must be the Japan factory)
0X = October 1990, and as you said, 66158 would be the production sequence number.

I have 4 GX4000's...

Details...
                              Serial                Month/Year             Mainboard
Amstrad GX4000    735-0831506    August 1990          MC0123B
Amstrad GX4000    735-0954646    September 1990    MC0123C
Amstrad GX4000    735-0X01138    October 1990        MC0123C
Amstrad GX4000    735-0X02646    October 1990        MC0123C

If the production component of the serial number is correct, then that equates to a lot more GX4000's made than usually indicated.

Cheers,
Shane

I have view, pictures with manufacture in early 91, i think there is a two or three months of not manufacture.

Not is amstrad who manufacture in japan, is orion. In these years they have plants in japan, thailand, etc etc Probably is because the lsi asic manufacture is made  in japan.

Slightly odd they would still be manufacturing in '91 as the machine was already being discounted to £50 post Christmas in the UK in order to clear stocks as the retailers were no longer interested.

The gx4000 was selled in u.k france and spain.

They exist, i buy one in retrocables, but unfortunly was defective  so i exchange it.

But they only change my console, not the box so my original serial number was in the box :) .

I view another this summer in ebay.es but cost 50e + shipping the console alone. So i don't buy it. :( .

I don't know what motherboard have inside anyway

Yes  ;D
I was fed-up opening my CPCs each time I was looking for CRTC/FDC/PPI version.
So I made a list with as much details I could think of that I fill each time I open a new CPC.

I've read that there were only 20k GX4000s sold, but this indicates a lot more (even if there are skips in the serial numbers).
I remember seeing stacks of GX4000s for £20 each at one point, probably late 1991.

There is no definite number. Figures between 15,000 and 40,000 are talked about.

Commodore only produced 20,000 GS consoles and sold 2500, but they could be converted back to C64's (and were)
