Hi all,
I'm new to this forum, so first of all hello and thanks in advance for any help you can give me. I'm starting my collection of retro computers in earnest just now and my father-in-law has discovered an old Amstrad CPC 464 in the attic that he had in the 80s. I never had one of them myself back in the 80s and I've never used them before but he still had the manual so I've managed to get it working and am trying to load games. The only problem is that the tape deck isn't working properly. It fast forwards and rewinds absolutely fine but nothing happens when I press Play! It just doesn't move.
Does anyone know if this is a common problem? Is there any way I can fix it? If I can't is there any way I can load tapes via an external tape deck?
Many thanks in advance for any help!
Michael
Have you tried typing
RUN"
then pressing enter before trying to load a tape?
Very welcome here! Maybe a CPC6128 can solve the problem ;)
HI! I had this problem when I couldnt remember how to play tapes lol
Have you tried pressing ctrl and small enter key? That will display Press play and press any key, press play and then any key then the motor will start to play the tape.
Welcome mate! Glad to see the CPC is still being discovered by people!
As the rest suggested, from the way you phrased it, you need to instruct the computer to start the tape. You don't just press Play and auto-feed the computer with the data :)
Thanks all. If it is something as simple as that I will be kicking myself and also be highly embarrassed! As I said I've never used an Amstrad before. I'll try the above suggestions and get back to you if I'm still having problems.
Thanks a lot.
Michael
Well, if it's that it's a classic RTFM case, but we don't care about that here, ask away!

?
lol I always get that when I plug in the C64 with the load "$",8 and all that rubbish... :) Amstrad seems much more user friendly.

Sometimes interpreted as "read the flipping manual" :D

RTFM = Read The FutureOS Manual[nb]But it's not explained there![/nb]
TFM = me
Oh God I'm so slow today ::)
Since when did the "F" stand for "Flipping" ?? Say it like it is: Read the fuckin' manual.
None of us are made of sugar here :D
Bryce.
You have to consider the possibility that children may read these posts and whilst I am sure they have heard it before, it is better to offer alternatives in the hope of halting the destruction of civilisation :(

Once I got banned for a week because I advised somebody ... RTFM... since that time I'm a bit more careful. Well, sometimes three letters are not enough ;)
Not everyone HAS a manual
Anyway, I hear men only read the manual when something goes wrong or you fail to set something up properly. And even then only after a lot of muttering
*hides*

Get real, it's a retro computer site. If you're under 30 you're a baby here. I doubt any teenagers ever read these posts, let alone minors.

;D thanks for the really nice compliment Bryce!
It was indirect and unintentional, but "You're welcome" anyway :)

I guess I'll be entering adulthood next year then :P
I still FEEL old.
Just to make sure, my post wasn't advising mikeyjhay to Read the Fine Manual, I just meant it's one of those silly cases...
Also, all manuals should start with this phrase:
"So, you screwed up really bad and decided to read me, eh?".

Maybe they do? How would
we know, none of us have probably ever got that far :D
Bryce.
No, they don't, I have a 664 manual as a coffee table book and read a bit from it every now and then (am now in the Sound chapter).
Unless - ooh, there were traces of torn paper in the spiral...

Really? Couldn't find them in my 6128 handbook, but maybe I got the version for little boys.
Thank god not all of them were the X-rated edition or we'd have troubles finding good condition ones...
