Title: uIDE-16 orders
Post by: martin464 on 13:34, 22 February 23
Guys, Jon B tells me he could craft some more of these if the minimum order quantity is met, anyone interested?

I'm curious for one thing to try hooking up a SATA drive to it, via an IDE to SATA converter which I can't see why wouldn't work. It would also be interesting to see how performance compares say to an M4. I suppose the M4 has the advantage being solid state, or does it? ... The SATA drive I have is SSD  :)

For anyone intrigued by such things or just wants one, file your orders in here!

Note, Jon makes these for various platforms, the one for us is the 16 version for the 16bit requirements of CPC port mapping (anyone think this was a good idea?!) - Also he provides an option for a Z80 shim, for us we don't have socket Z80's so need his adaptor also

Note 2, should work fine on a 464 I'm thinking, that's the machine i plan to put one in anyway!

I do not understand why there is a minimum order quantity, while:
- The price of 1x PCB for the user is the cost of 10x PCB for the seller.
- The price of 1x assembled interface is the cost of 10x interface parts.

From the wiki:
QuoteuIDE-16 bare board   £9.50
uIDE-16 assembled   £52.50

One assembled interface sold allow to cover the cost for 10 expansions parts.

i think it's more that he would rather make a batch, which makes sense, perhaps i used the wrong term

the most important thing to me is to find a way to make an led flash when there is drive access, just picture the tape counter replaced with a led. that would be feng shui.

The 16-bit port mapping on the CPC was *absolutely* a good idea, it removed the need for a large chunk of discrete address decoding logic on the main PCB. Have you seen the insides of american 8-bit computers? Yikes.

Yes yes, everyone's time is free, nobody should earn money on their products, we know. ;D

There is a gap between the reality and your ironical answer. :)

First time I heard that, it makes sense.. but rather than discussing the pro's and con's and opening a hornets nest (too late)

Returning to the uIDE - it *may* be possible to try something wild. You could turn on it's 8 bit addressing mode and pick the right IO port, it might be possible to use the IN/OUT (n), A or INI/IND for a short time. To get a speed boost in data transfer.
Perhaps other drivers for other devices or FDC have done the same already, it just occurred to me it was ripe for this given how you can define the port on the device

@TotO Am I correct in saying you have produced add ons for the CPC machines and sold them for very low prices? If so, that is your prerogative. However, criticising others who have a different approach to you is uncalled for.

Now it is clear. The cpcwiki users are free to buy your expensive IDE adapter by knowing they pay for your business-leasure (different approach), while others give their time to do games, softwares, demo, music, magazine, hardware, for the CPC community.

there's plenty of folk making something for their stuff (not software unfortunately though!) its only fair to charge a bit or make something resembling a profit.

I bought stuff off the company selling SCART adaptors and so on, I bought ram packs and other gear, this shows the CPC spirit is alive not the other way round, I think. Anyway, this if for people wanting to buy one of these, lets not get into who is charging too much or whatever or not enough or what ever isn't pure cpc code/hardware

I'm interested in this. Put me down for...
1 x CPC with expansion port connection. Assembled.
1 x PCW with expansion port connection. Assembled.
Fingers crossed there is enough interest.
Thanks for doing this.
Richard.

A note of caution for CPC owners.

The uiDE-16 interface provides a simple electrical connection to an IDE device like a DOM or CF card (DOMs are recommended, as they seem to be more compatible). However, please be aware that there is as far as I know no driver support for CP/M Plus or BASIC. I think it works under SymbOS, though.

I made this very clear on my Wiki page but I think it's wise to reiterate here. Therefore if any of you want to withdraw your interest that is perfectly OK.

uIDE-8 is fully supported on the PCW with CP/M Plus v1.4 and above.

Thanks
JonB

Although there isn't a stand alone driver, there is one integrated in HDCPM.
So you can boot CP/M Plus with HDCPM and use your uIDE-16 in its full glory. ;)

Oh wow, that is good news. What base I/O address does it use? And do you have a download link to it?

You're right, I am getting old.  :D

I added a link to your HDCPM Wiki page to my uIDE page (and added you to the list of acknowledgements at the bottom).
