Weird problem with Joystick

So yesterday I was at Superfly cafe and the owner told me the 6128 I had set up, one with an HxC, couldn't load any games.

I went to it, turned it on, saw a single "Z" after the Ready prompt. Asked him about it, he said "oh, it always did that". So I dismissed it, and tried to load a disk from the HxC. But every time I tried to access it, the HxC went berzerk, flashing its screen very fast between "Reading FAT" and something else, with no stop. Did that a few times, changing configurations etc, and then it hit me: a joystick was connected to it. Z=joystick=> take it out. And everything was back to normal.

So my question is this: something failed in that Quickshot II, but what could fail in such a way as to produce a single key input and then mess up with the drive?

MacDeath

wasn't Z used by the second joystick (with Y double cable) ?
Like Fire2 or something ?

use another joystick and check this joystick on other machines.

Gryzor

No, just a single joystick. Didn't have time to check it on a second machine...

no second joy, but if something is wrong with it it may have a glitch doing the same as some controls from the second joystick, as you know, CPC6128 has only one joy port which can be doubled...

Actually it could run a single "4 directions + 6 "fire" buttons"  joystick if correctly cabled...
(=10 buttons... or 2x4 directions + 2x1 fire buttons...)

Wasn't quickshoot 2 equipped with an Autofire ?
Some of those Joysticks also had a switch to choose for "CPC464" or other machines...

Also those joystick often had multiple re-brands...

which one is it :

Yeah, but I mean, if something was short-circuited, it would give out a constant stream of key presses. Also, why would it mess with the drive?

MacDeath

have you opened the machine and the joystick ? anyway, try another joy first... just to be sure.  :)

Bryce to the rescue !!!
Help !!!
Come to save the day !

Gryzor

Nah, didn't have the time for either of those options, was there with company. But I will.

Z is the second fire (FIRE1) of the first joystick. And yes, if that is tied to COM then you'd get that result. The keyboard code seems to never repeat these for me either, even though logically it should repeat letters.

Not all inputs automatically repeat. Some keys on the keyboard don't repeat either.

Bryce.

Gryzor

Fair enough; but would that mess with the drive?
