Title: Where can I buy an SD interface for my Amstrad?
Post by: banana on 03:10, 23 March 17
I tried looking online, but I was left rather confused.
I just would like a simple interface that can take an SD card (with interface) so I can run my software from the card.
TIA!

You didn't say which model you were looking for, but Zaxon sells a model for the 464 & 6128.

You also have the HxC floppy emulator:

That is my preferred solution. Not cheap, but very good quality hardware.

I agree with the HxC. This is also my preferred solution.

I strongly recomends M4 board from Duke.

Second the recommendation for the m4.

+1

Transferring files from my PC over Wi-Fi is magical!

Both the HxC and the M4 are great - I have both.

I find the HxC has the best compatibility - and is the closest to a real drive - for development it's essential.

but the M4 can do a lot more than just floppy disk emulation, so if you were only buying one thing, you may want to go for the M4!

I believe the Zaxxon is basically a all in one HxC - if you just bought the bare drive emulator, you'd need the right cable for it on a 6128- and it wouldn't work on the 464 as it doesn't have the disk firmware or connector.

The zaxxon drives are cheap clones of the gotek drive, running the HTC firmware. But produced in a cpc specific package, either as a slot in 3 inch drive replacement or a vertical expansion port card.

In order of preference of the floppy emulators I'd rand then as follows.

3rd gotek
2nd zaxxon
1st (by a mile) HxC

The HxC devices are so well made, and support more than just the cpc. The cased ones can be used on amiga and cpc machines.

The M4 is a great option as well, I agree  :) . I love the HxC because it is closer to a real drive, but DukeĀ“s card is simply great. Regarding Zaxxon clones, and although I personally hate to be a bullshitter, I think that it is fair to say that it is really difficult to obtain any kind of support if something fails and they are not made with the same quality standards than the HxCs.

Couldn't disagree with this statement more. The DDI-3 has lots of good reviews and happy users. I had a small issue with mine that was not a show stopper and which Zaxon resolved quickly.

On another note, I want an M4 as well!

I am really glad that it went so well  :) . Sadly, there are quite a lot of people with other kind of experiences. Actually, I was really eager to buy the JustCPC until the problems arose here, in the forum.

Thanks everyone! Having it work on an Amiga is a plus for me, although I don't own an Amiga, maybe in the future.

Probably best compatibility is Hxc, but it is much more expensive than M4, and clearly Hxc has less functionality, it is only a floppy drive emulator.
Almost all cracked games work fine with M4, and it has a lot more functionlities.
- You can update the firmware and the configuration by wifi.
- You can use the uSD as a big mass storage with FAT32 format, folders and long names handling.
- It has a ROM box with lowerROM and 32 UpperRoms in the same interface.
- It has compatibility with SymOS and many communication programs.
- You can launch sna files, or use dsk.

And the firmware still being improved with new functionalities.

Love both my HxC and M4!

Echoing what others have said the HxC is very expensive but so well made and robust. If you have more than one retro computer it is a great investment due to high levels of compatibility.

The M4 is probably the best expansion for our Amstrads ever made. It provides mass-storage not limited to small capacities like some of the other solutions but also the capability of providing ROMs and is fully controllable via a web interface. If the whispers of improved DSK support come to fruition then it could even replace the HxC!

Not strictly true that the HxC is just a floppy drive. The HxC also functions as sd card mass storage under symbos. OK you cannot use it as mass storage to boot symbos, but once you have booted into from a dsk emulated in the HxC. The OS can swap the device from floppy emulator to mass storage as needed.
