Title: VIDITEST13 - A tour round a Desktop
Post by: ComSoft6128 on 19:13, 21 March 22
Laptop->HDMI to Composite video converter->VIDI unit/6128 (Using VIDI software)->OSSC & Hauppauge Rocket.

A little "cheating" here - I increased the size of the laptop screen to 200% to make text more legible.

I'm impressed.

Not my idea!

It's mentioned in the original VIDI manual.
I think this might have been the method that some loading screens from other computers were ported to the CPC.
'The Pawn' has what looks like a bad mode 2 version of the loading screen from the ST version - see 0:25 in the video below.

And when I say "bad" I mean it looks like a straight port without any "tidying up" using the Advanced OCP Art Studio.

Hello
Might be a stupid question, but is the CPC playing a recorded video file ?
Or is it only monitoring the video input live from the VIDI ?

How big is the video file ?
Is the format documented ?
Couldn't we achieve better quality by generating such a file from a digital source (mp2, mp4) and skipping the analogue step ?

The CPC (using the the VIDI hardware and software) is displaying in real-time video input from a laptop with the file being stored as an MP4 file on a USB drive in the Hauppauge Rocket.
The audio component is supplied by a microphone also connected to the Rocket, however, that type of makeshift setup will be replaced shortly with a direct (3.5mm to 3.5mm) cable between the laptop and the Rocket.

Just in case anyone thinks this isn't "Retro" I was doing similar work nearly 30 years ago using the VIDI and the VideoMaster unit, the storage medium then was VCR tape.

As I understand, the CPC with VIDI is only able to record still frames, is that it ?

I wonder if we could play some video stored in a huge file on modern mass storage like SD card. Like the amiga does with raw HAM videos. What size and frame rate could we achieve ? 17k * 25 fps = 425 kb/s seems a lot, but perhaps with half or quarter resolution, and/or frame decimation ?

The CPU is not faster than in the 80s, but now we can easily store several megs, though I don't know how fast we can read those megs.

Yes, VIDI and the CPC can only grab and save user selected 17K screens - it updates at 5/6 screens a second.
