Yeah, before exclaiming "the fuck he's talking about, it looks the same", this is just an announcement. The next big version has been released, with tons of nice things like:
- A new WYSIWYG editor, SCEditor
- Real-time alerts in addition to email notifications
- A new default theme with full support for mobile devices
- Draft messages (you can save & resume later)
- Mentions using @name syntax
- Drag & drop attachments
- Attachments can be embedded directly into post text
- Really the change log is a mile long given that this version has been in the making presumably since it was still a BBS thing, so we'll find out together, but these are what they chose to put above anything else.
Going to prepare for the upgrade, then perform it tomorrow. Since it touches a lot of things and system files:
-some functionality based on mods/hacks will be lost
-the forum may go down for an unspecified amount of time, depending on how the server feels about it.
In that event, please follow updates on https://twitter.com/krakout .
Cheers
T
Ok, so after the upgrade here's some things:
+buddy/ignore lists enabled (some have asked for it)
+Likes enabled. This does not carry over the older Likes stats, sorry about that.
+Mentions enabled
+Participation icons next to the topics a user has posted in
+Print topic feature
+Mouse over a post's title in the lists shows a preview of the last post (could be first post always, if we prefer)
+Post and PMs drafts!!! These will be kept for 7 days before being purged.
+(I know you will like this) automatic saving of drafts every 30 seconds!
*email and alert notifications have been turned on for topics and replies, in threads and followed boards; also for quotes and mentions. I don't remember how this was set before, unfortunately if anyone had disabled it it will be re-enabled now. It was necessary though...
To be fixed:
-Pretty urls
Mentions using @name syntax: Didn't we already have that, or have I been doing it just for fun up to now?
Will we be getting the proper likes system back?
Bryce.
We did have mentions, but it was a mod. Same goes for Likes, but Likes is going to be a core feature now :) Unfortunately the previous tally will be lost.
So... I just did it. I was holding my breath for a full 15 minutes so I'm understandably reddish right now, but it looks like the prep we did yesterday help to avoid an immediate meltdown.
Let the testing begin, shall we, @Bryce ?
Ah mentions don't seem to work, taking note...
Testing mentions,
@Bryce -cool, it works!
Nice look!
Yeah, especially on mobile!!
There's a distinct piratical flavour to the forum now, for some reason... arrrrr.
What, ye dern't like it, pass the grog! I did that by mistake and will revert t' plain English. Ahoy, avast! However, Buccaneers will be able t' choose Pirate as their preferred language!
Would also be nice to have a theme which doesn't put the whole forum into a tiny column in the middle of my large 4k monitor, once you've put out the inevitable fires elsewhere. "Full mobile support" always seems to mean punching the desktop theme in the balls :(
I have an ultrawide monitor here and there is a lot of wasted space so if I find where the code specifies it I will set it to relative. However, I don't really think that setting the main container width to, say, 90% would look good on very wide resolutions, with the entire post in one line? :D
Good Work!! ...and nice look
OP updated with notes.
Seems perfectly fine to me, when I use the Inspector to disable the guilty css rule. If I was unable to handle a wide line of text I wouldn't be using this monitor in the first place
And here's hoping the editor bugs with microscopic text are a thing of the past!

We'll see, try editing your message and applying formatting to some of it, or try pasting formatted text from elsewhere.
Oh and did I mention that you can paste images in your posts? :D
CPC-Wiki 2022 is great! 8)
It looks to fix the message editor, that is the main feature for me.

Haha thanks, and thanks for the confirmation!!
Btw, since all (ALL) previous modifications, manual or otherwise, have been lost, please let me know if you miss any functionality!
I suggest that CPC-Wiki logo point to the cpc wiki (https://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/Main_Page), as you have a nice Home (https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php) button. :)
I could do it, but there's points for both arguments... Users of course tend to click on the logo in order to go back 'home', but 'home' here is the forum's main page, not the wiki. Then again a link to the wiki *is* missing...
The Home button go to the forum home page. That is the usage, and it is very visible.
The CPC-Wiki logo should have to allow many peoples to discover the Wiki content.
I'm more concerned with how to hide that blank space up there, or at least minimize it :D
A big banner including the logo and the text... ;D
Hi
@Gryzor .
Any way to select between receiving emails OR alerts, rather than both?
No biggie if not. :D
Ooh this is lovely indeed!
And no more blank space between lines in posts!

In your prefs, or in the Alerts Settings at the top :)

It would just push everything lower, 'wasted' space (that is, non-functional) would still be there... but I wouldn't object if someone could make a cpc-demo-like banner :D
Very nice look, already feeling nostalgic about the old one... much more convenient on mobile!
Well done
@Gryzor, congratulations for this great work!
Currently, the space is wasted by:
- date/time and the "Unread post ..." that can go at the same level than "Search / Members"
- "BIG UPDATE TO FORUM!!!"
- Duplicated "REPLY / MARK UNREAD / ..." entries at the top

-Yeah, that line is pretty useless.
-The topic title font is a bit on the huge side, but it looks bigger than it really is because it's in all caps. Other threads look somewhat better, though I'll see if I can locate where in the css it is.
-that's no issue, it doesn't take any extra space.

@Fran123 you have to go to the full editor (Reply button) to see the attachment options, as always.
Post bugs/remarks here or will there be another thread for that?
Sure why not
If I add a table into a post and set the text to be alligned on the right, it is not applied.
Boy that's specific😀
How do you insert a table?
I like it, thanks
@Gryzor!
Just say: thanks! 8)
It looks nice. Just as a remark, my browser always detects German as language, even if selected English or French.

Like previously, with the Table icon. ;D
Ah I didn't recognize the icon! But it looks like it's working for me.
Love this on my phone! Much more useable! Great work!
tiny bug: supporter icon is broken
Ah yeah, that's part of the Treasury app I think, not sure if it's possible to fix because I think Treasury doesn't work😐
I've noticed that since the upgrade links to things such as YouTube and Twitter are not being shown as embedded content. So you can't watch ComSofts YouTube videos directly in his post for example. Is that a plug-in or a tweak that's needed please? It was a very useful feature before.
Yes it was and yes I'm aware and yes I'll try to bring it back. For the time being there's a YouTube bb icon to insert embedded videos, but of course it doesn't do much good for older links!
I hope that we will have some flat coloured themes at end. :)

For some reason, it is not happening anymore. I chose English (US) and removed the "automatic" translation in chrome.
Another one:
Links from Google no longer work. Eg. this one:
https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/programming/rom-initialisation/
(and I am really excited the update was finally possible ... probably a few quirks here and there ... but that's normal for such a migration - thanks for the effort!)
How very exciting, definitely seems a lot more mobile friendly than the old one which is handy as I mostly look at the site on my phone these days.
Anyway, I can read and write posts and that's pretty much every bit of functionality necessary to me, so I consider it 100% successful!
That's a nice one! And the mobile experience has finally become enjoyable. Thanks Gryzor!
YouTube videos are not seen in the new forum as before? :D
I've just posted a video (using the new YT icon) and it looks fine :)
Ok, that looks different.

I'm missing the country flags that used to be shown next to the avatar.
I really liked that as it showed the cultural background of the person as well as it expressed how international this forum is.
And this is what I loved: that internationality of this forum.
That's now gone, kind of, as it's invisible.
Congrats
@Gryzor for the update, not an easy one! :)
Sorry guys, no screen time yesterday... Let's see all the replies!
@TotO : what do you mean by "flat coloured schemes"? We cam change the colours btw, it's not hard. I chose this particular palette we're seeing right now because it's easy on the eye and has good contrast. If anyone is good with palette compilations we can build a new one :)
@asertus : you probably described the reason :D
@eto : first on my to-do list, as soon as I fix the package manager that presents some issues. Basically the URLs reverted to the forum-specific format instead of using human-readable, prettified URLs.
@andycadley ,
@BSC : indeed it now looks great on mobile; finally it's a joy to use!
@XeNoMoRPH :second on my to-do list - media embedding.
@Bryce : don't sound so excited man, think of your heart!
@Nworc : I liked the little flags too, although people tended to abuse them sometimes :D Will see if I can bring them back.
@norecess : actually it turned out to be easier than expected! Although my heart was racing when I hit "go", the problems seem to be minor and am hoping they can be fixed. What I was afraid of was of it taking the whole server down as it's done in the past :D
Now let's start working on the mods...
URLS NOW PRETTY

Off topic button/code added
And now I'm gonna get some coffee.
I had now 2 situations, where I was no longer able to edit text, when editing:
I was typing a normal reply, then recognised a typo and tried to change a previous part of the text. When I do that, once I hit any key, the cursor jumps back to the end of the text.
Not sure if that only happens in Quick Reply or also the normal reply... Anyone else has experienced that?
Hmm haven't encountered that, will keep an eye out for it... Browser?
Quote from: Gryzor on 17:37, 03 March 22Hmm haven't encountered that, will keep an eye out for it... Browser?
Chrome on Mac - I will also check if I recognize a pattern or if it also happens on Firefox.
Ok, top menu is now editable!
To begin with I added a link to CPCWiki proper at the beginning of the row. But I'd like to ask your opinions/requests about what else to add. Can be a forum location, an action, an arbitrary link, a menu with sub-entries (other sites?)... you name it. It's quite flexible in what it can do.
As a bonus there can now be a bottom menu (currently only shows "Community") above the footer, but I can't see much use for it.
Let me know what you think!!
Font Awesome doesn't quite work right yet, trying to make the CPCWiki icon a custom one but all I get is an "app window" generic icon...
Can people tell me how the forum looks for you? Does it have the gradient effect or not? Look at the screenshots... Thanks!
Looking at the picture on the RH side - no, I don't see the (grey) gradient effect
Thanks. Oh, also if you could report OS and browser it'd help!
Windows 8.1 and Chrome.
No eye-candy for me :-[
Using Windows 11 & MS Edge, latest versions.
Thanks.
To clarify: the gradients are not supposed to be there, but I got a report that they do appear, but can't confirm...

You mean in the browser? A notification icon on the tab?
Yes
Will have to check that out. What did the notification signify for you? I don't remember if I ever had it...
Likes definitely, quotes and mails as well?
I didn't bother raising it previously because it wasn't major and I thought "leave the man alone he's been working like a dog recently!"

No Greyscaling here either. Win10 / Firefox 9768 (or whatever number they are up to now).
Bryce.
no gradient - Most recent Chrome, Mac OS
Thanks guys, appears to be an isolated thing, strangely enough.
If anyone wants to try their hand at creating a CPC-related color scheme (green maybe! :D ) I can share the colour details...
I see the gradient on a Gecko based browser, in the section
/* start of Color Changer mod output */ ... /* end of Color Changer mod output */
replace
{background-image: linear-gradient(to bottom, transparent 0%, #ffffff 70%);}
by
{}
and they are gone. (that's the 2nd gradient in the block)
Thanks for the feedback; I did see it in the stylesheet, but I'd prefer not to touch things manually - at least as much as I can avoid it...
The thing is that according to the theme I've edited there shouldn't be different colours (i.e. start and end colours should be the same), and I'm at a loss as to why only Gecko (?) is actually rendering it.
I think it's a bug in the implementation of some browsers, 0% means a stop position at the beginning, somehow the browser is doing it wrong. If you want to keep it most compatible, just replacing the 0% by 1% would fix the issue for these browsers and would have no impact at all on all others, so makes the page more compatible:
{background-image: linear-gradient(to bottom, transparent 1%, #ffffff 70%);}
Pretty interesting. I may report it as an issue with the software, but I don't think I'll tinker with it... Got to check the logs to see how many users use Gecko browsers.
...oops I haven't reinstated Analytics😀
Chrome on MacOS shows no gradients, while Safari on MacOS and iOS shows them.
Tried on Monterey, Catalina and iOS 15.
Thanks for that. I have some family issues to attend to, so I'll look more into it on Monday.
No gradients here on Arch Linux, in either Firefox 97.0.1 or Chrome 99.0.4844.51
No gradients: Chrome, Android 10.
Since the Safari last update, there is no more gradients on the forum display.
Good to hear, thanks 🙂

A much better user experenience since the upgrade - what about at your end as sysop?
Not a huge difference - of course the new interface makes things like moderating etc easier on the phone, but functionality-wise it's about the same.
