Is it me or was the server down recently ?

Obviously it got better... hope there is nothing wrong nor long term effects.

Can we have some informations about what happened ?

mr_lou

Felt like it was down for a week!

I might be addicted....
Do you need music for your Amstrad CPC game project?
Take a look at IndieGameMusic.com - that's where I put my tracks.

Fortunately it coincided with my BBQ (Remember the invite) so I did not miss it at all. I was *WAY* to busy serving drinks, cooking home made sausages... Oh yeah Making the sausages, having a little too much to drink... it was the Bushmills that did it

and being a little hungover this morning. Good to have it back now tho.

Hello guys,

That's why you can follow me on Twitter, I always send out updates there :)

Anyhow, what happened was, I was on vacation, and just as I was leaving that nice little island the server ran out of space and the database crashed and got corrupted. Of *course* it would happen just before I got back! Anyway. It stayed down because my trip was some 12 hours long and to say I could log into the server from the ship in the middle of the sea stretches things a bit. As soon as I got back I freed some space, the db was patched and here we are.

Sorry about that...
T

Thanks for your work Gryzor !

Nope, Twitter must of been down as well. Funny thing I heard today was Facebook went down, the Americans were in panic and dialled 911 on mass which resulted in Facebook issuing a Tweet to get them to cease dialling 911. It would be interesting to see what would happen if Twitter & Facebook went down at the same time, I guess there's always TV!  :D

I think we have been through this before. If your ship had been the Titanic or you had gone on 30 days vacation with no connection to the world, the CPCWiki would still be able to continue?

Twitter sucks here for me, at least that's what the Web Browser version does, cause it doesn't try to inform me when new Twit arrives in my email, or maybe I'm an idiot and have it setup wrong.  ;D

[ot]My Tweet settings are suggesting I should be getting Tweets when someone "shares their tweets with me", which should generate an email, it doesn't seem to be, which suggests Twitter aren't maintaining their web server thus dodgy.  >:( [/ot]

So.. you're asking me what would happen to the wiki if I died? :D Something tells me fixing the db would be rather low on my priority list...

@AMSDOS: you get notified by Twitter when someone mentions you in a tweet.

Bryce

You have a priority list for things you want to do AFTER you've died??

Bryce.

Gryzor

Sure: find out where all the good bars and restaurants are, which cloud has the best 3G reception, try and find a way to notify loved ones I'm doing ok, and so on.

Bryce

I think I have that one sorted: Barbeque and grill restaurants (with all those flames what else would be on offer). Most of my friends will end up there too, so I won't be lonely :) And as far as the cloud is concerned, I prefer local storage.

Bryce.

Gryzor

Ok, to get a bit serious (not that I discount grills and bbq's and everything), the very unfortunate coincidence yesterday was that the server's co-admin was also flying all day, so neither could take care of the server. If I were on the Titanic, or if I won the lottery and had a 30-day vacation, he would still be able to fix things.

And, as discussed before, there's a dead-man's-switch in place in case, I don't know, were we both to decide to check out the next planes of existence. So, you know, if someone agrees to pay the monthly host invoices all should be well.

Sorry I'm specifically against this exact one social network...

Is there a Fecebook page especially for CPCWiki instead ?

anyway, as you may know, a lot of bad stuff are happening in the world...

Israel/Gaza, Ukraine, Ebola... plus a lot more scandals here and there...

So internet is not really stable for our pesky stuffs as many bigger schemes are being covered by all intelligence services.
They may think we are dangerous international anarchist hacker gang.

What if you decide to take a cruise on the Titanic with the Co-admin!!  :o We're doomed I tell you!

But I want a Tweet in my Inbox when someone sends one, if it can do it for a dumb phone, why can't it do it for email?

There are roughly 1000 tweets in my timeline every day, and many users have many, many more. You mean to say Twitter should send me 1000 emails? You're not being serious... Maybe also replace the forum here with an email system?

Why not?? I don't get 1000 emails, perhaps you follow to many posters? There's just too much dribble on Twitter.

If we are debating "ways to notify the community when the server has problems and thus can't be used as a source of information", then I have a suggestion:

Any e-mail client nowadays offers options to add RSS feeds.

So: Create an RSS feed on another server, like e.g. the JavaCPC one.
Then community members who has an interest in being notified, can add this RSS feed in their e-mail client.

For the admins to add to the RSS feed can be as simple as editing an XML file, if we're too lazy to code any PHP renderer.

It wouldn't require much, since it should only be used for these technical infos, in my opinion.
