Title: CPCWiki online now on new server
Post by: Devilmarkus on 16:05, 10 August 09
Hi together,

after a few days of intensive work on the old CPC-Wiki database file (about 80mb), I managed to get CPC-Wiki website back online.

Many changes were needed in the internal database to make it work, so I still cannot promise you, that everything is back online.

Please check http://cpcwiki.eu and try it.

Also tell me please, when some things are not working yet.

Cheers,
Markus

Hello Markus.

Congratulations with your work.

Well, I have a little problem with this file :

http://cpcwiki.eu/index.php/File:Amsword_Disc_-_side_A.jpg (http://cpcwiki.eu/index.php/File:Amsword_Disc_-_side_A.jpg)

When I upload it, I don't mark on Show this file, and Then I try to upload another time well but I can't see now this file.

Is it necessary mark any time when upload files this: show this file?.

Perhaps we don't need this option.

Can you help me to repair this.

Thanks for all.

RAFA.

Hi RAFA,

I fixed your file.
It was not your fault.
Some folders were / are still wrong chmod'ed.
Maybe the correct chmod's will take effect later. My filezilla is going mad with this site.

Thanks Markus.

Now is OK.

One question : When I have some big manuals that I can't upload (bigger than 2 MB) in the past I send to Gryzor, now I can send to you for upload directly to the datafile of the CPCwiki.

Best thing is:
- Wait until Gryzor is back, so we (Gryzor & me) can discuss about the future.
- Use Wiki as read-only first, please.

Another small problem: When I try to login I only see a complete white page. I use the plain old standard Wiki style, as I don't like the new one, so I guess, that there is a problem with it. I would change it back, but I can't access my options. Can you please have a look at it or just change the selected style in my profile :)?

This new server is much, much faster than the old one :) Is there any way you can get the old domain (cpcwiki.com) pointed here though?

Hello guys,

@CPCmaniaco: I've got your manuals, will ftp them as soon as I get back, don't worry - and thanks!!!
@Octoate: when I get back I'll debug the php and see what causes it - haven't really tested the system with the old theme. I may need to ask you for your password or we could do it together at some point, but don't worry, we'll get it fixed :)
@Executioner: Kangaroo appears to be withholding the domain as some sort of punishment/revenge against me, I'm afraid...

Back to the beach,
Gryzor

No problem, I am not in a hurry - so you have all the time you need. Have a nice vacation and after that, we can have a look at the problem :).

You may modify articles links on wikipedia to point out the new page, i modified French edition : http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amstrad_CPC (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amstrad_CPC)

You're very much right about that....

This is one of the problems we're facing - since Kangaroo 'stole' the domain, the word must spread about the new url in every place. Tedious job... But thanks for pointing out the wikipedia articles.

@Octoate: I'm back now, so we can work on the issue you're facing. Can you email me? krakout gmail is the address :)

Yes, it's over here: http://cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php/topic,138.msg2710.html#msg2710

I'm working on it right now...

Ok, a couple of words about the wiki situation:

You can read the entire story here:
http://cpc-forum.de/viewtopic.php?t=710&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
(though most of it is in German).

To cut a long story short:

-Kangaroo decided, without any discussion, to withdraw support from the wiki (among other projects)
-In doing so, he also launched a personal attack against me, for reasons really unknown
-So I moved the wiki to another server, currently donated by Devilmarkus
-I also asked him to give me ownership of the cpcwiki.com domain, which he refused to do, and made it auto-redirect to his personal blog.

You can read my response here: http://cpc-forum.de/viewtopic.php?t=710&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=45
(in english, you gotta scroll down a bit)

End of story, for now. You can visit cpc-wiki.com, and everything is
functional again. Devilmarkus not only donated the space here, but he's also done a terrific job debugging the whole thing and cleaning the database to work on the new server, so let's all thank him :)

Thanks for your interest :)

Cheers
Gryzor

By the way, initially, and after Kangaroo's taking over the old domain, I feared for the worst in terms of people not finding us. Especially search engines - CPCWiki had built nice positions in those and we were getting enough traffic from there, and this will take time to happen with the new domain (anyone with expertise in SEO???). However, traffic is great, all things considered. Look at this:

Blue line is this year, green is last year. Of course, this year in general we're higher than 2008, but I think it's good enough. And not only that, Bounce Rate is down by 32% (meaning less people just land here and leave) and average time on site is up by 13%. So I think we'll pull it through...

Monobook (the default skin for the wiki) has been reinstated, it was a file problem. It hasn't been customised with stats and all, though, so please don't use it unless you MUST :D

Hi, that's a bummer about the cpcwiki domain...

Not sure if you're already aware of this, but now when editing a page with external links the captcha appears ok, but on submitting I just get a blank page with "Cannot open socket" at the top ???

Thanks for all the good work you're doing, BTW
Title: Re: CPCWiki online now on new server
Post by: Gryzor on 08:31, 27 August 09
Yes, I mentioned that in another thread; I had to reconfigure reCaptcha because of the domain change, and this is what happened. Can you try it again? I did something and it seems to work now, but it'd be great if you confirmed it...

Hmm no still not working... :(

PS would you mind adding an "announce" to the front page of the wiki that Robotron 6128 is complete and released now (http://cpcwiki.eu/index.php/Robotron_6128 (http://cpcwiki.eu/index.php/Robotron_6128)).

Cheers!

Damn. Can you tell me *exactly* what you're trying to do? It works fine here... :(

Robotron added, btw. Good job! :)

Woops forgot to reply the other day...

Well I'm still getting an error when trying to edit my wiki profile http://cpcwiki.eu/index.php?title=Lachlan_Keown (http://cpcwiki.eu/index.php?title=Lachlan_Keown).

See the bit down the bottom "insert facebook profile once can edit"?? Well, when I change that to [http://www.facebook.com/lachlankeown Facebook Profile], it asks me for captcha, then sends me to a blank page with "cannot open socket" message...

Hope that helps you resolve...

Lachlan

Damn (again)... The solution stopped working. I'm on it.

@Markus, can you ask the ISP if they're blocking connections to the ReCaptcha servers? I think the server is api-verify.recaptcha.net (sometimes called via https)...

No connections are blocked...
Maybe wiki has a blacklist? This is your job to check  ;)

No black list - it's a new domain after all! reCaptcha doesn't blacklist sites.

This problem is a weird one - it's been around for a while, but nobody has figured out a definite way to solve it!

So, people, listen up! (I've always wanted to say this :D ): I've disabled reCaptcha. If you recall, I had installed it because of increasing spam posts. If we start getting spam again, we'll battle it in other ways (I'll make it so we need to approve new users registrations).

So please, if you see any spam on the site, please PLEASE do report it here as soon as possible!

Thanks :)

Hi Gryzor

Hmmm... I don't know if it's spam related but it seems there is a problem showing pictures.. Eg. the new article about Magic Brush:

http://cpcwiki.eu/index.php/Magic_Brush (http://cpcwiki.eu/index.php/Magic_Brush)

When clicking direct on the picture (In 'recent changes'... A list of errors is generated:

Warning: imagejpeg() [function.imagejpeg]: SAFE MODE Restriction in effect. The script whose uid is 10363 is not allowed to access /var/www/vhosts/cpcwiki.eu/httpdocs/images/thumb/9/9a/Magic_brush_cover.jpg owned by uid 48 in /var/www/vhosts/cpcwiki.eu/httpdocs/includes/media/Bitmap.php on line 236

Warning: imagejpeg() [function.imagejpeg]: Invalid filename in /var/www/vhosts/cpcwiki.eu/httpdocs/includes/media/Bitmap.php on line 236

Seems to be a permissions problem!!

Hopefully not to hard to correct  ;D

This is a known issue, it's been discussed elsewhere (but please don't take this wrong! The more bug reports, the better!). It's got to do with a stupidity in the server configuration, and the fix is on my to-do list.

The errors are there because I have left the debug php output on, since I'm still working on it. Hopefully a fix is forthcoming... :)

Ok, let's come to this, which is a bit connected to the original topic...

Hi all!

Today the last german CPC forum was closed! It was reachable at:
http://cpc-forum.de/

Now if you read what Kangaroo wrotes there, it's far away from reality.

1. As Octoate created the forum, Kangaroo offered to take it on his server for free. But soon Octoate got a big bill! Finally he was forced to give it up. And Kangaroo overtook the forum!

2. Kangaroo mentioned that nobody pays for the forum and the cpc-wiki. I offered him 100 Euro per month and he insulted me for this.

3. Kangaroo sayd, if somebody will be there as admin for the forum, he will let it continue. I offered my help, again he ignored me.

4. He deleted the complete forum content, so nobody can see the offers and discussions.

Ok guys, let's use the CPCWIKI forum instead. Not german, but international ;-)

@Gryzor: You have been asking for help with the CPC-Wiki. I offerd you two times me help, first you had holidays, then you told me to come to the Wiki-Forum.
Now I offer you a third time my help, so in which way I can help the wiki the most?

TFM of FutureSoft

p.s.: The fetching preview function here doesn't work.

Hello TMF! Nice to see you here again :)

1.Indeed, what Kangaroo wrote and did is simply idiotic... I knew that there were people who offered to take over the forum, but I didn't know how it started. It sounds very much like the wiki case!

2.If nothing else, I don't get it why the projects should be on dedicated servers. It's not like we're running Google.com or something, I guess a shared server would do it! So the costs should never be so high - that was Kangaroo's decision alone.

4.I have a feeling he's bluffing, but then again the net result is the same, and it's really, really bad. There's absoluterly no good reason or excuse for this, other than being mean, very mean...

Now. Thanks again about offering your help. I'm currently facing a problem I'm a bit desperate about... You can read it over here: http://cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php/topic,138.msg2769 . In short, the host here has enabled PHP's safe mode, which causes problems with image uploading. And it seems that the safe mode workarounds fail, maybe because the host has other restrictions in place... got any idea? :(

Cheers
Gryzor

Yes indeed, you're right. Octoate told me the story recently; since he is a laid-back person he never talked about this in public. However, now the new "German" forum is integrated here - finally an advantage, as long as everything runs fine here. I hope it!!!

I'm not so familiar with the technical specs like you are, but I totally agree. And as we see the new CPC-Wiki is running well. Did some edits today, had no problems at all. So the dedicated server was finally dedicated to make money. At the moment I'm also thinking about moving my three homepages away from cmo.

He tries to loose weight, maybe "no food" drives him crazy. I can't understand his way of acting at all. I can't see logic at all.

Nah, it won't surprise me, I think he's certainly lost it for good.

Btw, yesterday I recalled an old discussion we had somewhere here, it was an argument over article revisions I think, and he said: "Well, this is MY wiki, and blahblahblah"... I didn't like it back then, but didn't say anything. But what went on proves I was right not to like it...

Ok, I guess, that there was now enough time to have both Wiki setups working to add missing articles from wiki.cpc-live.com to cpcwiki.eu. Can you please add a redirection with a .htaccess file to forward from wiki.cpc-live.com to cpcwiki.eu? If you search for the CPC Wiki, you will always get wiki.cpc-live.com in the first results.
