Title: Demo posts by 83.93.61.64
Post by: Gryzor on 09:35, 09 January 07
Hello guys!

Well, 200 articles reached in DEMO category (http://cpcwiki.eu/index.php/Category:Demos).

However, anyone knows who 83.93.61.64 is? He made lots of new articles but with minimal info, like:

QuoteHigh voltage, the first CPC demo from K.O.D. by Cedric, Jerome and Wild KODHIGHV

I doubt this is very usedul or interesting, the more so since lots of these articles lack even screenshots or links... Take a look:

http://cpcwiki.eu/index.php?title=Special:Contributions&target=83.93.61.64

I'm considering deleting them...

Cheers
Gryzor

Well - I just feel that it's better to try to build the base as much as possible instead of extending branches, branches, branches...

This is what I am always thinking, too... I really don't like these mini stubs.

I am really not talking about all your tons of entries with all the screen shots, scans, etc! This is really cool and useful! :)
I mean entries containing only one sentence and nothing else or something like this. IMHO it's better if people would invest more time for extending existing articles or create bigger new ones, as this would make CPC Wiki more interesting for everybody. On the other side every new "hint" (=mini stubs) about some CPC stuff of course could motivate others to extend the information. Hm...

Please use png for CPC screenshots. The many recent screen-shot uploads are 10000+ color jpeg.
This clearly illustrates that jpeg is for *photos*.
CPC screenshots are 32 colors max for which png is ideal. Or gif if need be.

In fact... some demos like Climax can display 125 colors on screen... but no one managed to make a proper screenshot yet :)

Hi all..

I completely agree with you all; PNG is the best format for doing screendumps! Unfortunately the server does not permit me to upload PNG(or GIF) files...

I get the dreaded "The file is corrupt or has an incorrect extension. Please check the file and upload again." message, over and over. This subject is covered in a thread on the board elsewhere!.. But it would be real nice with a fix of the problem, since it would also make it possible to upload file types! - and therefore increase the usability of the WIKI

So the only real alternative was JPG - sorry!

But in the future i will make the dumps in both JPG and PNG in case this problem get solved in the future! And i can then upload them in the future - when I get the time!

Concerning the upload problems: Mediawiki has progressed quite a long way since I created the CPCWiki, but I can't upgrade because of the PHP version on the server. I'm waiting for our generous and all-around lovely host to upgrade, then we'll see if anything stays unfixed.

Why not GIF, though? it's 256-colour, so it should be fine?

png compresses slightly better than (old) gif *), and have the cool tag feature, you could tag a png screenshot with say a deep link to cpcgamereviews.com or cpcwiki.com, a "link" tag. On the downside, png can hold only one image, no animation (the not-widely adopted mng format do this).
From the implementation point of view png is wonderful, a beauty!  :) (www.libpng.org on top of www.zlib.net)

Greetings
Troels

*) If your image program is clever enough to save the png with a palette, not in RGB true color

Using Gimpshop:
Fruity Frank.gif (http://home.tiscali.dk/troels_k/images/Fruity%20Frank.gif) - 11.7KB
Fruity Frank.png (http://home.tiscali.dk/troels_k/images/Fruity%20Frank.png) - 6.67KB

Hi all,

I use WinApe to generate the screenshots!

In WinApe its not possible to dump the screens in the GIF format

Therefore in the future i will dump the screenshots in the PNG format, and do batch conversions from there!

I get the dreaded "The file is corrupt or has an incorrect extension. Please check the file and upload again."
I get this message also. Please unblacklist png if possible!
The gif I ended up uploading is twice the size of the png I intended to upload.
Same image - except for the colors lost when converting the 371 color png to gif (256 colors max).

Hi Troels

Gryzor tried to fix this problem earlier but somehow this is not possible!

I don't think this problem will be solved until the next WIKI upgrade.

Indeed. I have looked into it time and again, it always fails... so I'm crossing my fingers for the PHP upgrade!
