Title: Forum upgrade
Post by: Gryzor on 16:39, 04 December 11
Hello guys,

Been putting it off for a long time now due to the time and effort it requires, but I think I'll finally do the forum software upgrade tomorrow morning probably.

So, maybe you'll encounter some downtime (in the range of minutes, though) and also, when we're done some functionality will have been lost. Please bear with me till I cook everything again...

Regards
T

Forum upgrade completed successfully.
Extra functionality will be returning in chunks. Already some of the custom stuff is working, still some way to go...

Let's try some things.

-Likes system: works, improved version
-RSS feeds: seem to be working, need someone to post something so we can verify :)

...works! Actually, in case you didn't know it, you can press "Add Multi Quote" in any thread in the forum and quote the post in your reply, it doesn't need to come from the same thread...
-Flags work!
-Lots of internal stuff: seem to work fine :)

New! Now the Quick Reply box has its own WYSIWYG toolbar. Handy - always missed that... :)

New! Now the post will flow around a more compact frame showing the poster's info. Let me know if you like it... Of course it only makes sense for longer posts (MacDeath, looking at you).

Just thought you should know there seems to be a problem with that Insector Hecti In The Interchange video, the video clip isn't displaying, only the name of it on the bottom, just in case it appears normal.

Is it possible to have the text on the same alignment?  :( What's happening is where the posts move down past the users post details, the text shifts moving to a different beginning which is off-putting.  :(

Yup, it does look a bit untidy, I also think it should stretch with the text, but it should keep the fancy 3D corner if possible?

Bryce.

Appologies you can disregard that as a problem, I was running my browser without the Plug-ins which consequently, would cause that to happen!  :-[

Yeah, YT plays fine and I even incorporated a quick flash installer in case you miss your plugins (though I haven't tested it).
As for the text going below the user's details, it's on purpose as I detailed in another post. But if you don't like it let me know...maybe I'll start a poll.

I usually make a big stink about these sorts of things, and I know it's not your fault, though I don't think complaining will go anywhere. It would just be nice to know where the text folds past the Users details, unfortunately the Preview doesn't show this!  :o

Not sure what you mean by "Preview". Do we have a hidden Preview feature somewhere?
As for complaining: this upgrade took me around 12-13 hours to schedule and implement, along with its functional changes. However, everything I do I do it for the users, not for myself. So if you people don't like something, we'll change it back. We try things, some of them stick, some of them don't; no need to keep them...

I generally click on the Post Reply or Quote button, which pops up another edit box (which usually has a bunch of buttons), next to the Post Button (down the Buttom) is the Preview Button which shows what the text is going to look like, it just doesn't show the Users profile as it would when you post the message though.

Though as you'll probably have noticed, I've posted an image at the time to force the text down, which solves the alignment problem I guess! :)

Ahhh I think I know what you mean; you want to know at what point the text flow breaks and goes underneath the avatar section... Well, this is not possible, I'm afraid. But why woul dyou want that?

Mmmm... I think I prefer the olde-skool forum style. This new style makes some, larger, pages look weird.

... ... ... ... ... ...

Ok, I was going to post a picture of the Zynaps Release page looking weird, but I've noticed the FORMATTING OPTIONS have disappeared from my IE8 browser. It does say 'Done, but with errors on page.' so it might just be MY browser that's failing rather than the page itself!

"Formatting options" seems to work fine for every browser I've tried, including IE9... not sure what happened there.
As for the "weird" (=what it's supposed to be like!) look, well, I'm not sure if it's weird/bad by itself or something we're not used to... I'd suggest to leave it for a few days and then see if we've gotten used to it? But do keep the feedback coming!

Not for IE8, then. I'll move my account to Chrome or Firefox, no problem. IE is too big for its boots, anyway!

EDIT: Ok, now it DOES work for IE8! Ta! And it doesn't work for this edit!

I guess it's different, then, than weird.*

(* Take note, 90+% of internet bloggers, tweeters, commenters, forum posters and anonymous hate-mongers; this is the PROPER use of the words THEN & THAN! Present forum users accepted, of course!)

EDIT1: This problem is for narcissists only; when viewing your 2nd/3rd/4th/etc page of LIKED POSTS in your profile, the URL omits the 'sa=liked' command! It's fine for the 1st page, though, unless you click-back to page 1! (ie, you've clicked page 2 and then click page 1)
(I'll be honest, it did this before the update but I was too embarrassed to mention it!)

EDIT2: The only other thing I've noticed that's different to the olde forum is that the CPC-Wiki logo (top left) now points to the forum index, rather than the Wiki main-page... as it did prior!

Not found of the new display of posts, with the break in alignment, but if you can do nothing about it, i'll leave with it ;)

Aaarrrgghhh, you've told Gryzor! Now he'll go and change it again :( I always preferred when it just refreshed the Forum page. Oh well, I enjoyed it while it lasted.

Bryce.

I didn't say to change it, I just mentioned it was different from before. If you feel it's better linking to the forum index, then why not keep it this way?

I was lazy and used it as my link to the Wiki, but I can always create another bookmark... infact, already done!

I don't like the new look, it looks unformatted, messy and cramped.
Also when I go back to unread posts, it still shows the posts I have read, whereas before they were removed after I read them.
Finally, I rely on the CPC-Wiki logo to take me to the Wiki.

- Why clicking on the top-left CPCWiki logo stay on the forum index instead of the home page ?
- Is possible to not resize pictures with X384 pixels ?

And rightly so! :D You can just click on the CPCWiki forum to update.

I'm having issues with the formatting buttons not appearing everytime as well, it merely shows the Subject Bar, Message icon: bar and just the text box underneath that with options to Attach, Preview & Post Buttons are present. Am also getting errors on page message.

Damn you, guys.
The logo thing was a manual hack I had done, which disappeared at some point due to some minor code update (most probably, hadn't noticed it). But now it seems it's part of the default forum code, so it'll stay as it is as I find it makes more sense anyhow :)

Now, I've disabled the compact post flow since it seems you ungrateful people didn't like it. I also changed the code so as to keep the nice 3d-like poster corner as Bryce requested. Can I get a pint?

@Kev: good to hear :) Though I wasn't sure whether it was just bad or just different - meaning we should have waited a bit to get accustomed to it before judging it... oh well.

@Bryce: credit card #?

Why isn't the Forum giving a pop-up notification for PMs any more? It worked yesterday?

Could this be a long term issue ?

That's how it always went. Tracking unique views would pose an unnecessary load on the system...

I think Bryce had my half of the pint, I fear Bryce has since washed it down! :o Otherwise I'm most greatful, particularly those Programming posts will look good again! :tumbs_up :D
