Hey guys,
These past few days, starting with the short downtime we had when we updated the server software, I've had some discussions with some of you which made me take a step back and take a look at the whole project.
The CPCWiki has been chugging along nicely for a few years now. Statistics vs last year show an increase of more than 20% in sessions and more than 8% in users (even though for a couple of months the wiki itself had stopped providing statistics due to an update that I didn't catch).
I was thinking, however, that maybe it's time to change things a bit, or maybe add more. This is where I'd like your input. Please let me know if you have any ideas about what you'd like to see implemented or changed, no matter how small or crazy it might sound. Criticism also welcome. You can do it either in this thread or send me a PM or an email - even anonymously (check out this (http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/anonymous-email-providers/) for some ways to send anonymous email). Hopefully, enough ideas will be generated that we will be able to discuss them and maybe put them to a vote.
So, please, get your noggins together and say where you want the Wiki and/or the forum to go :)
Cheers
G
Maybe I'm just easily pleased, but I like the Forum just the way it is :)
Bryce.
Well I like it too, but you know, better is the enemy of good and all that... :)
Sorry, back again. We REEEEALLLY need a Face-palm / double face-palm omoticon!
Bryce.
I also think the forum is good as it is now.
Sometimes more is not the same as better and I like to keep things simple.
Maybe a button to go back from the forum to the wiki's main page would be nice ;)

What's wrong with the "CPCWiki" button at the top of the screen that we have now?
Bryce.
Nothing, but it points to the forum's main page, not the wiki's main page :P
From my point of view the most valuable stuff are the bits and pieces on programming (code snippets mostly) and hardware that popup in forum threads. This valuable knowledge is scattered all around the forum. Ideally maybe a bot could identify such posts and collect them in one place on the wiki. This may be hard to achieve though, I'm fully aware of it.

Not on my computer. I don't mean the Logo, I mean the "CPCWiki" button between the "Home" and "Download" buttons.
Bryce.
Ah...
How long has it been there? :o
I guess the big nice CPCWiki logo makes everyone think it's the place to click to go back to the wiki.
Thanks for pointing that out! (I'm going to the doctor to see if I'm already blind... XD)
I really like the present status of the Wiki, to be honest. I do not see any problem with the design and how the things work :) .Well, we could have a 6128 or a Plus in the logo, but besides that... :D

It's possible to Bookmark a thread which comes in handy for future reference, though it's not possible to Bookmark a specific reply (if that's of any help for you or anyone), even though each reply gets it's own Anchored URL.

Please Ignore.
Is there a button on the Wiki to get back to the Forum (Or have i missed it ??)
OOOps yes its there right up the top of the page in my face (ohhhh well new glasses ).
I will have to get a Braille monitor next.
Thanks Ray
Hey guys, thanks for your answers and comments, anything and everything is welcome!
@Bryce (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=225) : I'll see what I can do to add an emoticon for you, though I haven't seen a facepalm one anywhere :)
@robcfg (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=4) : the link has been there for years, literally :D The logo pointing to the forum homepage is hardcoded and not customiseable; I *can* change it but it will change back to its default with the next update, so I would prefer to avoid that.
@Singaja (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1284) : this is a great idea. Having a bot do the job would be much farther than my current AI-programming abilities I'm afraid, but indeed, with a bit of extra work we could identify relevant Wiki articles and maybe just insert a link in them?
@||C|-|E|| (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1447) : the 464 is more iconic though, isn't it? :)
@AMSDOS (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=330) : you're right about the restriction; but what you're asking for (which makes sense, btw) would mean adding the button to each post, adding more overhead for the server. I'll think about how it could be implemented though!
@Audronic (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1169) : left-hand sidebar, under the "Wiki-related" section, "Discussion Forum" :)
The Amibay Face-palm and double face-palm are quite nice.
@robcfg (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=4): We'll all just pretend you never asked the question :)
Bryce.
Ah, the  one is nice, but I see no double face-palms?

Only just noticed this myself. Anyone could create their own user page on the Wiki, with their own collection of direct URLs if necessarily. :D
Well, you can use your User page for that!

There's really no 'regulations' for those pages, you can do whatever you want (short of insulting others of course)! :)

Criticism is welcome? Really? Ok, hope you can take it.
Wiki itself:
- The CPCWiki itself is imho very well organized
- It's articles have usually high quality
Forum:
- It's good to have sticky topics to enhance important things
- Moderation is catastrophic, because it is totally biased, depends on personal likes and dislikes. People get all the time threatened to get banned. It's like in one of these countries, one just doesn't want to life. But it's paradise if the Moderator likes you.
- The number of members is just amazingly high
- Also the international team work has a solid base here
We have facepalms now. Which is nice.
Are they recorded against our user similar to the likes?

How about an option to delete a post you've made in error.

The reason why this (and many other) Forums don't allow deleting is because it tends to get abused. People delete more than just posts made in error, especially when arguments are involved.
Bryce.
I'm quite happy with the forum as it is myself, but then I'm no expert. Like the face palm emoticons by the way :)
I don't have suggestions for the forum myself and so far I haven't contributed anything to the wiki so I can't really tell.
Just keep it working like it is :)

It's not about somebody others post! But everybody should have the right to delete the _own_ post. Now as we know we can alter a post anyway. So instead of deleting a post it just stays there contains something like "Ignore this post please" and looks ugly.
Yes, deletion would be great!
@reidrac (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1504) , @CPC_Fan (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1127) , no experience or contributions needed really, just ideas :)
Posts will NOT be allowed to be deleted for the reasons Bryce pointed out. There's a good and established reason for it, and indeed when it was allowed it was abused. Yes, allowing editing posts somewhat negates the lack of permission, but at least we know when someone has edited posts so things make more sense.
You mean someone would start a flame and then delete it?
Forums I knew that have a Delete option, was only available to the poster for a short period of time, because of it being a posted by mistake.
But I think in some Forums if you Delete a post, it doesn't get deleted and will go to the Moderator team for review, if they don't like what they see, they can sort it out.
This is how it works more or less now - people have been reporting their own (usually double) posts, we review them and delete them.
And yes, deletion was removed when people used it to delete their flame posts.
I was rethinking my idea of collecting posts on some topic and I do believe if threads would be tagged (maybe automatically based on occurring keywords + manually of course) it could greatly aid the process for a hypothetical wiki-bot (or maybe not a wiki-bot , but some kind of rss-like bot?)
Not very practical I think...
Automatic tagging - I tried that for a while, but it was far from perfect; and users don't really bother to do it manually :D
Then you'd need to assign the same tags to wiki articles, and finally you'd need to create a bot and a cron job to crawl the database and pull the content to them. Too much room for error, though it'd be a great idea if it could work :(

This is one of the more better behaved forums.
I can't believe people used to make flame post or mess around.
Never thought of reporting my post to have it deleted.
I only brought it up because I had a post last week I made in error but couldn't delete.

Thanks. Yes, things are generally pretty quiet, and people get along nicely. We did have our share of flame wars though, it's unavoidable when people come together...
Yeah, reporting your own post is not what first comes to mind, and certainly unorthodox, but it works :) In other cases people just edit their posts to "please delete" and we take care of these when we come upon them, either is fine.

Not sure if I'm opening up a can of worms with this suggestion, initially I thought what this forum needs is a "Back in the Day" category, but I don't know to what end it would end (hence the Can of Worms). For example there's the "Old Hardware"/"New Hardware", "Old Games"/"New Games", "Old Applications"/"New Applications" and "Old Programming Languages"/"New Programming Languages".
I'm raising this now because of this thread (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/programming/unprotecting-basic-games-loader-protected/), but apparently it was something which needed a "New School" solution.
So I thought that perhaps this will be becoming more of a regular occurrence in the Future, given the amount of new gadgets & software being produced?
But I don't know how it should proceed, if it could be implemented with minimum overhead, that maybe better than opening a new Category for example. By that I mean something like an Off-Topic Button or another Message Icon, though people may forget to use it if they are talking about the 80s/early 90s, which is where a Category for all that old stuff (Game, Programming, Hardware, etc) could go, though one would have Label in the Subject the category, or maybe not, I don't know.
When does 2000-2010 fall into the "back in the days" category from the "new school" one? :D

Well if it does, I've incorrectly assumed people were talking about the period from 1984-1995 when they were talking about 2000-2010.
I'm really not sure what's special about that thread or what the new category (categories?) would include... can you make it a bit clearer?
Hi Gryzor!
Could you change the maximum file upload size on the Wiki to, say, 100 MB? 28 MB is simply not enough for some CPC books as PDFs — the high image compression ratio causes artifacting. I'd like to upload higher-quality versions.
P.S. The file in question is http://cpcwiki.eu/imgs/0/0d/Koch%2C_Intelligenz_in_BASIC.pdf (http://cpcwiki.eu/imgs/0/0d/Koch%2C_Intelligenz_in_BASIC.pdf) , the text looks really bad in the 25 MB version. I have the 85 MB original I'd like to post.
Hello Morn!
Thanks for the comment. The limit is intentional because, even though the server can handle it, people tend to abuse largesse :D What we do is that whenthere's real need for huge files I up them through FTP. If you have a way to upload them somewhere let me know, otherwise I'll give you access :)
Maybe I could simply email the file to you if e.g. you have a Google account or something like that with lots of inbox space—or you could give me FTP access temporarily.
I don't really want to upload the file to a cloud hoster like box.com or Google Drive because strictly speaking, these book scans are copyright violations. So I feel they should go into the Wiki directly.
You can always upload it to drive as private, that's not against any laws, but sure, try emailing it to me :) I don't know what gmail's limit is, but my address is krakout.
OK, it looks like files > 25 MB need to use a Google Drive link anyway...
P.S. I've sent you another file, Gryzor.

Yes, the disk image is also on the CPC Wiki. Also note the Wiki has categories for scanned books: Category:Scanned books - CPCWiki (http://cpcwiki.eu/index.php/Category:Scanned_books) and AI books: Category:Artificial Intelligence books - CPCWiki (http://cpcwiki.eu/index.php/Category:Artificial_Intelligence_books)
It's funny how AI research has come full circle and is finally as hot now in 2016 as it was in the late 1980s. Finally a lot of the things these books envisaged have come to fruition, e.g. image recognition and text translation. It just took much longer than anticipated.

Apologies man, I edited your post; I would like the links to reside in the wiki itself, in the relevant articles, for obvious reasons...
Looking at the menu at the top of the forum page I don't see the option to go to the wiki site, as in http://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/Main_Page
Sure it used to be there before, now I wonder where it could have got to............. :blank:
This is true, I should add it again at some point.
Good stuff.
@Gryzor (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1) Is there a problem adding a Link back to the Main Page of the Wiki?

Hi Admin
The security settings for some photos are FAULTY i have been trying for 30 minutes to send a second photo as a .Jpg " FAILED " I then took a picture on my mac of the same photo as a .png " FAILED "
I still cannot send the photo ??????????????????????????????????????????

Man, you don't really offer much detail...
If you do a search on the forum, there is a long-standing bug within SMF where some photos will fail due to security restrictions, when they shouldn't. Trying to upload the same photo again, or another photo with the same filename, will fail again.

OK thanks I will have to be Patient.
I am using a Mac and the Photos came from the new Photos Program, and from a screen shot Not via Photos.

Try to open the file in an editing program, save it again with another filename and try uploading again!

Unfortunately, yes. Tapatalk was never a correct way to implement mobile viewing because it bypassed normal forum software APIs (not only with SMF but with others as well) and hooked directly into the database. This caused all sorts of problems to various fora, but security issues is another level altogether.

Yeah, it's sad indeed.
On the other hand, I've asked for suggestions for a possible forum system migration, but got no ideas from people... :(
I'm unsure if it's related, though each time I Log In to the Forum, Safari is telling me "Website not secure". It seems to be only happening on the Forums I Log In to though, seems to be because the sites have the https:// Otherwise it hasn't really being bothering me, was just wondering.
Hi Gryzor,
I would imagine that moving to a new system is probably way outside most members experience so this is probably why you have had little feedback on the subject.
I am sure the members would help in any way if they could :)
AMSDOS - yes I have the same "not secure" message with Opera and like yourself it doesn't seem to be a problem.

And yet, we'll probably have to switch at some point or the other... I'm no longer really satisfied with SMF - I feel it has fell behind times.
