Hello guys,
When I was putting the wiki together I had spent quite some time figuring stuff out (boy, hindsight is soooo much better), and I only spent a couple of days coming up with a logo. I'm no gfx artist, so I merely threw together a few alternatives and picked the one that looked best.
However, ever since then it was supposed to be a temporary thing - which, eventually, stuck with us. Nothing more permanent, blahblah.
Sooo, how about we put out a call for artists to create a new logo? Maybe we could do a little contest? Maybe people could donate some prizes for it? I could, for instance, maybe give out some of the titles in my collection (free choice from a list, perhaps), or a 3.5" drive...
Any interest? What do you think?
@Gryzor
I would like to print out and laminate the logo for this site - this would be displayed with the Amstrads on show at blackpool - at the bottom would be this site's URL
Hopefull Replay patrons will see some of the Awesome behind the CPC range and and come here to find out more =)
The event is on the 5th of November - so if you can have a new Logo up by the 4th then I can print it and laminate for the show =)
no rush ;)
Heh, this would be cool, have the new logo unveiled at the event :D
I just hope our pixel artists see this thread... But before getting there I merely wanted to gauge reactions regarding a possible compo.
Are there any limitations? What size should it be? Does it have to be Mode 2 compatible :D ?
Bryce.

Actually I would prefer CPC screen mode 3.
Well, if someone could make something resembling mode 2, why not? :) As for the size, it would have to be usable on the site, I guess!
Just to make sure, you want the exact same width - height size as current CPC WIKI logo replacement ?
I noticed the one on main page is not the same size that the one on forum. No artist would accept to see his work resized.
Can it be a large banner instead of a squared bitmap ? Do you want both ? (one for the main page which looks squared, and a big banner for the forum)
Please give us the specs (for both "sprite" version and "banner" version), I have someone to contact but I want the good requirements before.
No real specs, I'm afraid. The logo on the forum is the same size as on the wiki itself, but a logo must be able to be used on all sorts of occasions... Not sure about what you say about artists - logos are *supposed* to be resized all the time :D
Say, I just took a look at the site's stats. 1920x1080 visitors are on the rise significantly, so it would seem that at some point in the future we'd need to put a bigger logo on the page, anyway.
If we could make a new banner out of it, all the better - I made the banner out of necessity for the Topsites list alone, after all.
So, the only spec I could probably give is: "square-ish" and on a transparent background so it can be used seamlessly. But I'd say that the logo we see here is about the smallest we'd need, size-wise. If it's a vector design all the better, but a good bitmap that can be downsized works, too.
Please do give more feedback, I really appreciate it...
How about instead of only having one CPC-Wiki logo, we have a whole set of them; not unlike pouet.net (http://www.pouet.net/), AMP (http://amp.dascene.net/) or even Push'N'Pop (http://www.pushnpop.net/). To simplify it somewhat, we could just have a logo-of-the-day & have it change at 00:00 (server time). These logos could show off different aspects of the CPC machines; the graphic capabilites, games, demos, hardware and (of course) the people who still program on them.
No?
This is an excellent idea; Mediawiki and SMF (our forum software) only support random logos for each page load, not at time intervals, but I guess a script to change the specific logo.png on the server is not that hard to figure out :)
The real problem is, I doubt we'll have enough entries to do that... :(

We have some of the best 8-bit artistic talent in the world, I'm sure they'll come up with the goods! ^_^
Indeed, some really talented people in here. That's why I put the idea forward :) Let's hope they notice this and feel motivated.
So, how about the compo idea? Anyone willing to contribute some small prizes?
It's not enough. Give real specs ("need banner of 1024x256") otherwise I will not contact the awesome gfxman I have in mind :) Logos are not made to be resized, hope you understand..
I beg to differ. As someone with experience in 8 years of marketing and brand management I can tell you that there's no single logo that's not supposed to be resized. That's why logos are always drawn in vectors, so that you can resize the heck out of them.
Maybe we mean different things? Maybe you mean skewing the logo (which is, indeed, not allowed)?
Anyway, specs: 1280x1280, Illustrator format? If he (or anyone else) doesn't use Illustrator then whatever tool is in hand! Oh, and different dimensions will not disqualify the entry :D
You see, we don't need a banner, we need a logo. When we have the logo we can think about banners...
Big thanks to your awesome gfxman - gfx on your page are inded delicious :)
How can you ask a "pixel artist" to destroy his art by resizing it ? :-\
Blah.. let's continue to use the current CPC Wiki logo, it's good looking after all and people get (positively) used to.
Ahhh but see, you're talking about pixel art. I didn't mention pixel art!
For pixel art I guess a maximum of 220x120 sounds about right, what do you think? (But this is very small for someone who won't do pixel art)
Is there a gaming mascott for the CPC range?
y'know how like Sega has Sonic, Nintendo has Mario and arguably the Spectrum has Manic Minor - is there anything as iconic for the CPC?
Only the Croco really, but that was in France.
Sonic had his own game, does croco have any games?

Oh hell, this is pointless :D Maybe a rotating logo with different characters, then?
But how to realize moving JPG like rotating characters on paper? Liquid crystals?
I think a cool 'logo' (as part of a rotation, not as the main one) would be a nod to the pioneers of the CPC - Alan Sugar, Roland Perry, Cliff Lawson etc - in the style of Andy Warhol's Marilyn Monroe portrait. Especially if it was made from photos of them in the 80s.
I'm rubbish at art though, so it will probably just remain an idea in my mind :)

If you don't mind me asking, will there still be a home for the old CPCWiki Logo on CPCWiki? I kinda like it! :-[ I guess it's the checkered theme which gives this site the edge where it brings the CPC Community together! :)

Yes, but I can send you the *original* and then you can flog it on eBay for crazy monies! :D
Unfortunately I've long lost the source files...
Ripped the HoH cover art and experimented a bit with PS (also abusing the default filters, I know it's bad, sorry about that :).
(I kept the .psd file if someone wants to improve the idea, because I wont. There's way too much colors, way too much pixels, it confuses me too much I want my Art Studio back! :)
Heheheh this is really cute :)
But why not port it to some pixel-lovin' art?
@Grim
All you need now is another logo of Heels! Brilliant stuff! ^_^
(FYI: I will always 'like' anything to do with 'Head Over Heels', my all-time favourite game of all-time. So if anyone feels you need a 'like'-boost, then produce HoH stuff!)

Won't really need the *Original* for this idea I had, I had another idea about tweaking it since I'm a nut for 60s stuff, but that defeats the purpose of my first idea! :D
Quote from: tastefulmrship on 07:23, 14 October 11All you need now is another logo of Heels! Brilliant stuff! ^_^
Here it is :)
Looks great! :)
...it was the logical conclusion :)
Why not creating a few logos and with a random code everytime a different logo appears?
Already proposed :)
But, what about THE ACTUAL CONTEST? :D
Amstrad always pitched the CPC as more than just a gaming machine, so I think overemphasizing the gaming aspect in the logo is actually a disservice to what the CPC was all about. A cute character from a game would be appropriate for a site that is exclusively about CPC games but that is not the case here.
The existing logo isn't that bad IMO. The retro-futuristic font for "the CPC" is pretty nice. Also, the red checkerboard seems sort of fitting for the 80s. Vaguely suggests auto racing and the Amiga boing ball I guess. :) The main problem is a poor font and text color choice for "wiki", which makes it too hard to read.
Gryzor, perhaps you could come up with some variations of the existing logo? Particularly a different font for "wiki".
:P (Zynaps syndrome)

Also, unfortunately (as I said) I've lost the source files so I can't alter the existing one... :( Thanks for the comments on the existing one, though, I'm happy that what I was thinking came through, what with my crappy gfx ability and all.

Do not hit me, but I have adjusted some drop shadow, lightning and pixels ratio on your logo.
Will have to see how it upsizes, though it shouldn't be much of a problem... any ideas about a background? Maybe a starfield?
@TotO: Thanks for the adjustments! I was just thinking to fix them, but it's complicated at work... ;D
@Gryzor: My ideas is to use integral scaling so that we always have the nice pixels. Should you like some more stylish, it could be converted into vectors, but I still like the blocky feeling, hehe.

Apologies to everyone, but here's my contribution! It needs a lot of work, especially on the 'k', but it's kinda nostalgic!

Ok, if you can ignore the fact that I can neither draw nor use an art package, then here's my "Serious Software" Logo. The only impressive bit (The 464) is from DevilMarkus, who obviously can use an art package a lot better than I can :D

@tastefulmrship: oooh going (Am)soft.... :) Yes, I can see a pattern there, a rotating logo is more and more possible!
@Bryce: stick with the soldering iron :p Just kidding, this is nice, I only think it'd be better if the 'serious software' was more prominent in it - that's the idea after all, innit?

'RockRiver' will have to have the leading and trailing 'score line' removed, but I can't see any reason why it can't be done. I'll have a look this weekend on PC, if possible... unless you want to do it instead!
The code is the original AMSOFT logo builder (copyright 1984 whoever wrote it), but I have changed the format so it has one command per line and removed some of the unused variables that were littering the whole thing. This makes debugging a lot easier.
Here are a few notes;
The program first creates all of the horizontal lines in the logo; (so if you're defining your own, you will need to pre-calculate the number. Building the logo in a paint package first will make this a lot easier)
- Each line is defined once, despite being 4 pixels deep (format:
x-position,
y-position,
length)
- The program then DRAWs x,y x,y+2 x+2,y+4 & x+2,y+6 for each horizontal line
- This is repeated until all horizontals are completed
Then, all vertical lines are drawn;
- Each line is defined once, despite being 5 pixels deep (format:
x-position,
y-position,
height)
- The program actually DRAWs '5 pixel width' horizontal lines, upwards to create the vertical lines
- This is repeated until all verticals are completed
Finally, the special lines are drawn;
- Things like the bottom part of the 'W' and the fiddly bits of the 'k' in my example
- These are not defined in procedures, but are created in succession, so you do not need to pre-calculate the number.
- For your logo, you will need to do bits of the '
R', the '
k' and the '
v' as special lines.
Once done, the program draws the same thing, but in a different PEN, 4 pixels to the left and 4 pixels above.
(yep, more tl;dr from me!)
EDIT: Just to get you started, here's a VERY quick mock-up so you have a fair idea of how it might look!
(Personally, I'm not too happy with how the '
R' and the '
v' turned out... you'll be able to do much better!)
I was going to edit the last post, but I decided to create a new one... I don't care about double posting! Ner!

The CPC picture works, but takes a bit more effort than the original version. The lower part ("WIKI") is harder to see than the upper section ("CPC"). And if you concentrate long enough you can even see the different heights of the "WIKI" letters even on the CPC picture.
Nice idea, I really like it. :)
