Title: Sixty Program for the CPC464
Post by: CPCLER on 07:34, 29 August 08
Hi Erwin

Really awsome job you have done on the book.. I am very impressed by the good editing and the seamless flawless OCR of the typeins!

I have done a lot of OCR myself, but I find it very time consuming to get good OCR done.

What program have you used for OCR and in what resolution was the original scans done?

In my experience everything under (though it depends on the typeface) 300 dpi gets to many errors

Regards,
CPCLER

PS. I have put a link to the mother article on every typein.. hope you dont mind :-)

Indeed, fantastic work and I was wondering myself about the program. Must be a pain in the arse OCRing listings...

Sorry for the late reply, but... better late than never eh?
(I've never looked at the cpcwiki forums before - I didn't even notice the "forums" link!)

I used Omnipage Professional (version 16) to perform the OCR.
I was surprised how well it turned out.
Regardless, a heck of a lot of work is needed to correct the mistakes in the OCR files, as they are still terribly inaccurate. Nonetheless, it is a good start.
If only the book contained listings in a non-dot matrix font...

The original scans were done in 600 dpi. The scans uploaded to cpcwiki are only 150 dpi, as 600 dpi scans would have taken much too long to upload, and would also kill Gryzor's bandwidth if they were downloaded too often.

I'm trying to find time to work on the ACU type-ins project at the moment, as well as finish my Sabre Wulf remake. After that I'll try to work on tidying up the 60 programs listings.

Basically dot-matrix, as long as it's consistent, is very easy to OCR.

Btw, I have, somewhere, a program that produces scans from digital photos; what it does it it corrects distortions etc, and makes it very easy to just take a shot and then OCR it. Lemme know if you're interested!

Oh, also, welcome to the forum :D

Cheers

Hi Themis.

Thanks for the welcome to the forum.
My login to this forum is long overdue. I can't believe I never thought to check the wiki for a forum!  :)

I tried a program like that while I was trying to get the best possible scans of the sixty programs book. I don't remember what it was called, but it didn't help.
Nonetheless, I'd be very interested to have a look at what you have? What is the program called?

[EDIT] Is the program called "Snapter"?

Heheh, nevermind, it's not as if the forum is a prominent part of the wiki! Of course this may now change, at least for a while...

The program is Snapter indeed. I haven't tried it yet (but I will, soon, with some WACCI issues), but i have version 2.04 and it sounds promising...
