I don't know, if there is a new type of spam robots, which are specialized for (Media)Wikis, or if there are just some f... guys who have fun with spreading spam and crap.
But what I would like to know is...
- does this happen in all Wikis today?
- are there mechanisms for stopping this automatically (and not only manually)? (referrer check, browser check, javascript check, etc...) Does MediaWiki already provide such protections?

Hi,

I was wondering about that to!
I reverted a weird entry to what looked as the correct previous entry!

Hi all!

It seems that a bot keeps "attacking" this article...

Maybe we should remove this article completely!...

How did this happen in the first place? I have never expirienced a WIKI attacker bot before!!

There is a quick and easy way: stop postings from persons who haven't logged in (anonymous posts, then), and requiring registration verification. When I set it up, I decided against both, because it would slow down the growth of the wiki. But if spam reaches uncontrollable levels I will reinstate this policy...

Or just lock it?

Maybe you should just switch the Wiki system to "only editing when logged in". This would prevent spammers from using the Wiki to place their ads. If you have a look at the Wiki history you see that all contributors have already a login.

Yes, Gryzor, please lock CPCWiki for unregistered users! I am getting tired in reverting spam and locking single articles.
Locking unregistered users (at least for a while) should help.

Once Spammers learned that it pays off to abuse open systems, there is no other way than to close them down.
Please, require login, close the opened can of worms.
If helpful people are not smart enough to figure out how to login, then it's a pity for missing their help,
but it doesn't pay off against the spam volume: bots are too massive to combat.

Ok, ok, will do tonight :)

Well, it would really nice, if you could do that. All these spam-rollbacks don't make so much fun anymore...  >:(

Well, I removed 10 crap entries, Ygdrazil 1, Villain 1, SpaceRat 1 and Prodatron at least 3 during the last two days. I won't do this any longer...  >:(

...no need to (I've taken a couple down myself).

Apologies, everyone, since I switched jobs I've been quite busy (in a nice way, I have to say), so things took a kind of a back seat in my everyday life...

The reason I had not implemented a total block up to now has been discussed before. Technically it proved rather difficult to implement some changes in mediawiki software versionr prior to 1.10 (CPCwiki runs on 1.1.9.3), and sometimes I had broken things trying to restrict others.

But since it seems that spamming has taken off lately, I will block all not-logged-in users from posting when I get back home tonight (I can't ftp from work network).

Thanks, everybody,
Themis

Anon posting has now been disabled, thank you all for your patience!

Thanx so much Gryzor! (and also for resurrecting the CPCWiki!) I guess, this will really prevent a lot of troubles!
I also want to thank Villain, Octo, Ygdrazil, Cpcler and everyone else a lot for fighting against the spam. Let's hope, that the problem is solved now  :)
