Title: Why the wiki moved
Post by: Gryzor on 19:25, 02 December 11
Ok people,

Some of you asked (either here or privately) why we moved. As I said, I didn't say it before the move took place because I didn't want to expose Andreas to unnecessary strain.

Well, here it is. The reason was that Kangaroo (yes, again) threatened Andreas with a lawsuit (!?) if we didn't withdraw this page (http://cpcwiki.eu/index.php/Kangaroo_MusiQue).

You'll notice that this is a pretty factual page, and Kangaroo has even been asked in the past (when he, once more, had threatened with a lawsuit) to submit his objections in the Talk page, something which he refused to do. I really can't fathom what the basis of his lawsuit would be, but Andreas could not deal with the threat, and so we had to move.

Some may ask, why not remove the page and stay with Andreas' server? Well, the reason is, I don't want the Wiki to be bound to anyone's wishes. This could be a bad precedent. In a community fights erupt all the time, imagine what would happen if we had to yield every time someone shouted "lawsuit!". Not good.

What's more, it's also a matter or principle, pure and simple. If someone threatens you with irrational measures you dig in and fight - sort of.

So I found it better to move servers, incur a big financial loss and keep the wiki running.

Feel free to comment.

Cheers
T

You can put the financial loss in one scale pan, and the value of the Kangaroo article into the other scale pan. Now I try to imagine which one goes up. ;)

I just hope this it the last chapter of that kind of stories.

What I would have done:
- Delete Kangaroos article according to his wish
- Set up proper rights-management for the CPCWiki
- Create a new article about him if desired by community
- Take all the saved money (no server move) and buy Irish Whisky (Jameson!) for it
- Drink the Whisky  :P
Well, as you can see my idea is bad for the healty

TFM is right.
And I would like to thank you Gryzor to keep managing this site.

@TFM: regarding the article, as I've said before, the funny thing is that it was going to be deleted eventually (despite it being cooled down over earlier versions, and quite abridged). But with Kangaroo's behavior, I wonder why I should, after all...

As for rights management, please do elaborate what exactly you mean. Total lack of moderation??

@jbaudrand: thanks, mate, appreciate it... :)

Sounds complicated and over my head, which is why I normally don't ask!  :-X  If they simply don't agree with something on their page, they can delete it and delete themselves, don't they have that ability?  ???

Well, if you look through the page's history you'll see Kangaroo had tried to change the article to his liking. But why let him?

Ähm, no. I thought about something like ....

"To save your new article / your edit, please check the box at the left corner to declare that you transfer all rights of your text/update to CPC wiki."

Something like this, there are 10000 better solutions, just look what the big wiki does. So nobody can just delete articles out of a mood (not mod  ).

The only problem I can see with that is if you need to update that thread, e.g. Using WebCPC to link between the disk image you attach, it requires the post to be posted and then edited to allow that Disk Image to be linked with it, not that, that happens frequently!  :)  Though things like other attachments, images you've attached and you simply want to display to go with your post so it makes sense, rather than have them stuck down the bottom, those sorts of things require an edit of those posts as well.

That's if we're talking about doing a one-off post and after that it cannot be changed!  :-[

I did refer to CPCWiki articles, not forum posts.

If you have an important Disc-Image, then load it to the CPCWiki, not the forum.

I don't know cause if you start adding more little boxes to be checked then eventually it will get to the stage where you'll have to click more little boxes just to post on the Wiki as well as on the Forum.  :o
Surely the conditions you sign to when you Register is a legal representation of your agreement to respect those conditions, if futher issues arrise then perhaps that agreement needs to be reviewed otherwise they won't have much meaning.  :o

I'm sure we did have a copyright page, but I'll be damned if I can find it now.
But, no matter. The thing is, the article is written by myself anyhow, so noone can claim copyright and remove it...
