Title: Joystick question
Post by: ComSoft6128 on 13:07, 12 April 24
I'm looking at playing CPC games thru an emulator (probably WinApe) - do I need a PC joystick or will a mouse be sufficient?

winape does not support mouse emulation, as far as i know
but you can emulate joystick inputs via keyboard, like most of emulators
if you want to play with a mouse, first you need an emulator with dedicated plugins (Ace-DL, Caprice Forever, ???)
and depending on mouse emulation (AMX, Multiplay, Symbiface, ...) a game that support mouse inputs
AMX is kindah like a joystick, but worst  ;D

You will not find many CPC games that support playing with a mouse, although the keyboard is usually a suitable alternative to a joystick. I'm not sure any emulators will emulate a joystick via a mouse but, given the CPC expects a digital joystick, the experience probably wouldn't be very good if they did.

With regards specifically to WinApe: The joystick is simulated via your PC keyboard's number block as long as Num Lock is disabled, with Num 5 standing in for the fire button. With Num Lock enabled it will simulate the F0-F9 keys.

Back in my emulation days, I used an Xbox 360 wired controller. Back then I had to install the driver CD but that was Windows 7, but I think the drivers are built in from 8 onwards. I also believe Bluetooth controllers may work with it, but I haven't tested that myself.

Indeed WinApe supports AMX mouse joystick emulation!

You just have to go to
Setup -> Input -> enable AMX  mouse

and it works quite well for programs, which use the Joystick for controlling something like a pointer! The only issue is, that the real mouse pointer could leave the emulator window and is lost then (WinApe doesn't capture the real mouse).

But if I understood it correctly Peter was wondering if he could attach an USB Joystick to the PC and use this for the WinApe.
And yes, this works as well.
I have a "modern" USB version of the Competition Pro Joystick and can use it with WinApe, when you do this:

Setup -> Input -> enable Joystick

You may have to restart WinApe after plugging in the Joystick into the USB port.

Mouse in Winamp work quite fine only with emulator on fullscreen, not in window. Because you move at once two pointer real in PC and CPC in emulator and each of them move in different speed and you click both point in the same time, what makes problems.

As joy I using gamepad by USB, and work fine. :)

From the menu, select Settings and Input.
Tick on Enable Joystick, then click on the Load button, and select the Joystick.kbd file I have put in enclosure. You must drop that file in your WinAPE folder beforehand.
This will allow you to use the cursor keys as a joystick, with left CTRL & SHIFT acting as FIRE1 & 2.
Load the default.kbd file to set back the regular keyboard behavior.
