Title: WinApe Memory Full
Post by: professor6153 on 14:20, 09 April 24
Good morning,

I have been playing Tyrann ( a French RPG ) using Winape 2.0 Beta 2.  Everything works very well and I am able to save a scenario to tape.  My problem starts when I am trying to LOAD the scenario from the tape.  After awhile I get a Memory full with a Ready prompt.  I thought I have tried all the different memory permutations with the same result.  I am positive I am doing something incorrect or have missed the proper setting.  Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can try regarding the proper memory tweaks?  I would really appreciate any help.  Thank you for taking the time to read me and thanks in advance

probably parados ROM, use legacy ROM (there is a preset without parados, just use it)

Do you mean try Parados?  I did and still received the Memory Full message just now.  I've also tried the default where no ROM is selected.  Here are my ROM choices - which one is the Legacy ROM - use with 4M expansion choice?

I also checked the box Disable All ROMS and tried and still got the same Memory Full error.  I saw a person post on the internet that they received the same Memory Full error and then tweaked the settings to get it to work so I'm sure I have not stumbled on the right combination yet.  I really appreciate any help anyone can provide.

I will send $100 to the first person who corrects this problem for me.  That's a promise

in the Profile list, select a configuration WITHOUT parados

I tried every configuration under the profile list and still get the Memory Full error

Memory Full is a BASIC error and BASIC only uses the first 64K. So you probably want to pick a 464 Model (not a 464+) with no disk drive, no expansion ROMs at all and turn off any memory expansions or other devices.

When I choose C464 with or without PARADOS I get a black screen and nothing is happening when I load the disk. 464 plus works but again I always get the Memory full error

Try another emulator. If the problem remains, it could be a problem of the game itself.

I know the disk is good - it's something I'm not doing right

Ok, so it's a disk game? Wasn't clear because you talked about saving to tape.

In that case, take your 464 configuration, enable a single disk drive and an AMSDOS ROM in slot 7. That should be the minimum memory configuration.

It IS a disk game - but they want you to save your progress to tape.  I have no problem saving to tape.  I also seem to have no problem as the characters are progressing loading the saved tape.  It's when I get ready to go to the next dungeon level that I get a Memory full error when loading the tape. I'm playing again, started over, and am saving and loading with no errors so far.  I'll see if I progress to a point where it happens again

So I just started over again - the tape saves and loads - until I start to make some progress and the characters begin to purchase more items...suddenly a Memory Full error - there has to be a combination that allows me to successfully load these tape saves

Maybe not. Maybe the game is just bugged?

If it's BASIC, it might be possible to fix it.

Try using those settings. Also, put the Os464_(French_AZERTY).rom file in your ROM folder.

Thank you so much I am going to try this.  Where can I obtain the Os464_(French_AZERTY).rom?  I'm googling and looking for it now but striking out so far

So odd - I downloaded your Rom and .ini file you gave me - windows won't let me extract it or copy it into my Winape folder - I keep getting error messages

Most odd... Could be your antivirus acting up (although there's nothing to worry about). Try turning it off for a moment. Are you logged on Windows as an administrator?
Anyway, you can trick Windows by copying the enclosed Text file in your ROM folder. Then, you'll need to change the extension from TXT to ROM. ;D
edit: Also, this file is not compulsory, it's just to make your life easier if you're using a french keyboard...

Well under the settings you gave me it won't even boot the disk - it's just a black screen - under properties - which machine did you want me to select?

Post by: professor6153 on 02:38, 10 April 24
Actually it's because I still cannot access your winAPE.ini file that you created.  I disabled my antivirus software and checked my administrative tasks and I don't get why it won't let me do anything with the file.  I've never encountered that before.  Your solution for the Os464 worked perfectly...if you could rename the WinAPE.ini to .txt and I'll do the same thing there.  Hopefully then the settings will be as you want and this will work.   Thank you for all your help.  If this works I am going to reward your time

An easy workaround is to edit your WinAPE.ini file with Notepad, and copy/paste the code below, and save it.

I had a quick look at Tyrann, and it's possible to save your progress on Disc rather than Tape. You can even save your progress on the original disc, as there is enough free space on it.
You'll find the original disc version in enclosure, taken from CPC-Power (https://www.cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&num=2326).
It's always safer to rely on original versions from serious websites, rather than cracked versions which can be buggy.
Don't bother rewarding me, and give some money to the WinAPE creator instead:

Thanks for the kind offer though.

I feel like I'm getting closer - I do NOT have a french keyboard - so I replaced with Os464 and it I loaded an old file that I couldn't load before - and it worked - I did try the original disk as you suggested - I thought I would start over - and that wouldn't even load - it hung with those settings...when I loaded the "cracked" disk - it worked.

I wanted to thank Jean-Marie again for taking time out to help yesterday.  The solution presented completely worked thus far - and I've been able to continue play with the game.  The game is odd in that the use of a save state on the emulator is a detriment.  The game seems to "check" and look at real saved positions in order to open up future levels in the game.  Very unique.  I had some time and energy in translating and learning the game and didn't want to discard what I had started based on a technical hurdle.  I am truly appreciative.  I set out to play every single RPG in the order in which they were published.  I started with PLATO games in 1975 and I am currently playing games now that were published in 1984.  Tyrann is the first French RPG and also the first French game that I've played.  I already had completed an initial blog post on Tyrann and wanted to continue with the game to the point of completion if I could.  So myself and my blog thanks Jean Marie and EVERYONE ELSE who also took time and energy to help with my dilemma.  What an amazing supportive community here.  I have a blog that documents my journey as well as a website that is a labor of love.

Here is the link to my blog post on Tyrann which marks the 228th game in my journey

Game #228: Tyrann (1984) – Retro Games Trove (https://www.retrogamestrove.com/game-228-tyrann-1984/)

You're welcome! If you're stuck, you can find the maps of all levels here :

I was a big fan of RPG back in the heydays, but I couldn't find Tyrann in the stores. I had Mandragore (the french Ultima), but never managed to solve its puzzles.

Try another emulator in classic 464 mode without AMSDOS.
