I keep hearing that the Amstrad version of Donkey Kong is the best, but it seems elusive...
Is it extremely rare? Or perhaps people just don't want to part with it?
Did it come out on tape? Or was there only a disk version? Cant find any pictures of a tape version online.
If you have a copy, tell us what you think of it and post a picture!
From a quick search i see

I have it, picked up a full priced Ocean Software version back in 2018 I believe it was on an Amstrad Facebook group.
I'd say it's the best out of the 8bit micro versions, although the C64 version comes close second.
Avoid the Spectrum version at all costs, they totally buggered it.
I never knew it existed until probably 2021. I never saw it in a store, never saw an advert, never saw it on a list of anyone. And I was a huge Donkey Kong arcade fan, so I would have definitely bought it if I would have known it existed.
However nowadays I barely can stand playing despite it being really good - but it as I am SO used to the original sound it drives me nuts that the CPCs sound is one hand very similar to the original - - but on the other hand uses lower frequencies.

I don't believe it was around for very long. Legend has it that Nintendo and Ocean's agreement fell apart after the two titles (with Mario Bros being the other) and Nintendo prevented any further copies being distributed. Hence why it no copies of it appear on any UK compilations (not sure how Spain got away with it!) or on any budget labels.
So in a way, while a good amount of copies did do the rounds, it has become sort of a rarity. Apparently it did appear on disc as well but good luck finding it. The artwork for it is on CPC-Power though.
I first had it in 87 as a loose cassette, not sure how it landed in my possession at the time though but I spent countless hours on it. Still do! :D
And apart from that, the Donkey Kong game has the same "bug" like the Arcade. 100% coin-op conversion ;D

Same bug, just not as many levels to discover it though. In the arcade you can play for an age before the kill screen happens.
On the CPC the kill screen occurs on the 5th loop of the game.
