Hello,

I would like to know if this program is a commercial game or not, as I have never seen an original cassette or disk of it. Doing an internet search, Wiki answer is "yes", but without any proof... So I am quite confused :-). Help !

CPC-Power describe Boulder dash 2 as a Hack if that's of any help.
* Using the old Amstrad Languages :D   * with the Firmware :P
* I also like to problem solve code in BASIC :)   * And type-in Type-Ins! :D

I am certain that Boulder Dash 2 on the CPC is just a version of Boulder Dash with modified levels. The official Spectrum release features a completely different set of levels.

I was going to link to the World Of Spectrum article too.

There's a weird thing with the Boulder Dash series.
I remember getting a version of Boulder Dash on cassette made by Hi-Tec software - it definitely was a 'sequel' according to the cover (I have a vague recollection of it being Boulder Dash IV) but supposedly *included* the Boulder Dash Construction Kit. The game itself was in fact Boulder Dash 1 (playing it now via emulation) and the construction kit could never be found on the cassette! LOL

I'll dig the game out when I'm next at home.

I remember AA reviewing that game at some stage in AA57 it was reviewed as the Boulder dash Construction Kit. Sounds bizaree you never got the construction kit cause the AA review included a screenshot of it.

Hello,

Thanks for these informations. That would be nice to have a release of the game with Spectrum levels. Maybe it is not too difficult to do if the levels encoding is not too different. I will check that when I will get time to loose :-).

Hey guys

I wasn't crazy, Boulder Dash IV *does* exist .... proof below!

If someone can alert the necessary person from CPC Power website they're more than welcome to use my scans.

As for the actual game.......

It's supposed to have both the original Boulder Dash game AND the Construction Kit ... however I believe my copy is either defective or the suppliers/duplicaters/manufacturers put the wrong (original game) cassette in there as I could never get the Construction Kit to load.

I'm going to fire up the 464 tomorrow and give it a try again, then maybe I can send someone the cassette to dump it ... however I'm not sure it's necessary with the original Boulder Dash and Construction Kit already dumped separately...

Interestingly, that cover seems to be the same as the construction kit cover - http://cpc-power.com/images/jaquettes/2709_6.jpg
Just with different background and colours used, and flipped horizontally.

AMSDOS

Interesting it has the First Star logo on the back - I thought First Star only did Boulder dash 3 - at least that's what's on the CPC Power site. The original Boulderdash game was from Mirrorsoft!  :-[

Hello,

Boulder dash was a First Star game, even on CPC. The copyright is displayed in the loader screen and in the main menu. Mirrorsoft has just spreaded the game.

I had made some checks on Boulder dash 2 MSX version, and unfortunately, levels structure is not the same as Boulder dash 1. (funny thing, all releases of Boulder dash 1 (C64, MSX, not tested other ones) have the same levels organization).

Many interesting informations about the BD games here :

Xyphoes, I will send your cover scan to Kukulkan, it may be updated soon on cpc-power :-).

There are lots of levels released for the c64, and lots of different versions. It would be good if these could be converted for cpc, then the cpc can be better than the c64 for boulderdash  :P

Hello,

I think most levels done for other computers are created with the Construction kit. I don't have verified if Amstrad conversion uses the same level encoding, but there is a good probability that they are compatible (programmers are lazy and don't change things that can be carbon copied from one machine to another :-) ).
