hiya guys,
I put on Dizzy VII (tape version) tonight only to find when the game had finished loading a loud clicking/buzzing sound began to emanate from the CPC by the escape key of the keyboard. The game uses a small mode for more colours, but i was not expecting it to buzz!
When i reset the cpc the buzzing stopped... Any ideas?
(The game is also known as Crystal Kingdom Dizzy)
Cheers, Sio
If you are using a 6128 then almost directly below the "Esc" key is the tape motor control relay.
If you are using a 664 then the tape motor relay would be just below the left hand "Shift" key.
For the 464 the relay is within the tape unit PCB (so directly under where the tape sits).
Sounds like you are using a 6128 and the relay was buzzing for some reason...it may be on the way out, or just got in a funny state.
I would not let it buzz for very long, as long term it may be detrimental (to the relay)...maybe the buzzing actually cleaned the contacts ;)
(A relay is an electrically operated switch.)
Cheers,
Shane
I think its a hint that you should not play this game. It really sucks on the CPC. Plays great on the Atari ST or Amiga though.
It buzzes here, too:

Hahaha, it does too...does that mean that my "tape motor relay control" in my laptop is playing up ;D
Cheers,
Shane
Many games buzz...
Who knows more than Dizzy VII???
I start: Sigma 7
There were games that used the cassette motor relay for buzzing sound effects. Is the buzzing in Dizzy and Sigma intentional or a bug?
Bryce.
So there are games that intentionally buzzed the tape relay :o
Wow' I did not realise that...that does not soundlike a great idea :-\
Cheers,
Shane
I think I had one game that buzzed it at the very end when you completed the game. It's not really all that bad for the relay, because there should be no current flowing through the contacts (when play isn't pressed). As long as you didn't leave it buzzing for hours.
Was this the very first attempt at Force Feedback? :D
Bryce.
Wasn't there also a title that actually clacked the deck mechanism?

Codemasters'
Soccer Pinball (http://www.cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&num=1975) clicks the tape motor frequently.
As a sound effect or as a bug?

I'm pretty sure it was intended as a sound effect. If I remember correctly, it clicked at the beginning of every ball being loaded on the spring mechanism.
Haven't played it in ages and unfortunately I don't have it on tape to check it out...
Funny little game. Has got 9/10 on Gamespot :D
