Try something like Feud. My son loved that because you could wander around quite a while without the danger of being wiped out (and he liked the music too).

Same with Wriggler and Radzone. Big world to move around in, and you can pick your own way choosing the easiest screens.

Now that my six year old has discovered Minecraft, it's become very hard to get him to play anything else!
An expanding array of hardware available at www.cpcstore.co.uk (and issue 4 of CPC Fanzine!)

Same with our now 9-year old, discovered Minecraft at age 8. Have only played on PlayStation 3 though because Microsuck's payment system never works for us when trying to buy the PC Java version.

Got my kids on roland in the caves. Son (7) failed miserably. Daughter (5) first go, straight out! I was amazed.

She can't do it again though  ;D

I've always been a terrible video game player. The games I used to like when I was a kid were those not too punishing (not early at least): Saboteur, Super Wonder Boy in Monsterland, race games like Lotus Turbo Esprit Challenge or Super Cars, Turrican (I don't remember which one), Batty, Shackled, Skweek, Forgotten Worlds, Strider

As others have mentioned... Fruity Frank!
An absolutely brilliant game that is easy to get into and contains plenty of scope for lots of interesting strategies.
Back in the day I used to play it a lot with my (non-gamer) cousins, and they still remember it to this day!

Gryzor

Fruity Frank - excellent choice! Not only does it look great, but it can be as slow paced as you want and it does require some thinking...

Fruity Frank wasn't just "a game for kids" in our home. It was a game us kids could make the grown-ups play too. :)
Didn't happen often.
My mum played it the most, competing with the highscores. But I still remember one time I was diggin' through the level while holding down the fire-button, resulting it what looked like me simply bashing the purple baddie with my bare fists, and hearing my dad outburst: "Aaww.... how did he do that??" to my mum. :D
Holding down the fire-button means you'll throw the ball as soon as possible - which is when you enter a hallway. And if a baddie is standing there, he's toast.

Definitely one of the most played games for us back then.
It is of course a kind of clone of the arcade game "Mr. Do" which I saw some years earlier and which also instantly appealed to me - but I find Fruity Frank better.

I would have played it even more if the music hadn't been so annoying.

I like the music. Nice and simplistic. Not a whole lot happening.  :)

From experiences with my kids: Fruity Frank works, Arkanoid not. Too fast. I openend a thread some years ago, asking for a slow-downed version...

Bubble Bobble also works quite well.
There was an entry for CPCRetroDev previously called Disassembler https://www.cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&num=15638 which is a very slow version of breakout.

Thanks. Now they are old enough for the fast stuff. 😂

My son (10) played Batman (the first Batman and my first CPC game by the way) and Boulder Dash a lot.
Besides his switch, we both enjoy Zelda on the + at the moment.

My other son (6) only likes watching us play. Sometimes he asks about watching (my) demos.
TGS is back
