Title: We need to get our kids into CPC Gaming!
Post by: ukmarkh on 15:31, 25 January 21
My five-year-old daughter (almost six) is asking for more kids' games on the CPC. She loves the new Bubble Bobble 4 CPC but finds it difficult past stage 4. Could I ask that these games come with a kid-friendly mode in the future, please? She watches me playing all these new games and wishes she could play them as well. She's finding new CPC games really difficult.

The CPC never died, so there's no reason our children can't share the same early gaming memories that we did. She loves the following games:

Chuckie Egg
Edd the Duck
Rainbow Islands (finds it really difficult)
Rampage (finds it difficult to jump off of a building before it falls).
Trap Door

She wants to love Mickey Mouse, but no idea what to do. I tried it as well, very boring, waste of a great license if you ask me.

Tom and Jerry's game is awful, what a shame.

Rainbow Islands *is* difficult; I remember taking a while for me to get accustomed to jumping on those rainbows.

Since she likes Rampage take a look at Ramparts, too.

But yeah, can't wait to try those old games with my son...

Try something like Feud. My son loved that because you could wander around quite a while without the danger of being wiped out (and he liked the music too).

Bryce.

What about Pang or is that maybe a bit too hard for a kid?

Early levels, probably not, but it becomes quite hard IIRC...

Way too difficult. But it was more of a consideration for new games that could include a child-friendly option to enable kids to experience gaming on the CPC.

My son got surprising good at Baba's Palace. The fact it's slow paced and you can restart a level at any time was good for him...

Let´s see... when I got the Amstrad I was a kid and also a pretty terrible player, so I always liked "easy" games. I have fond memories of L.E.D Storm, PaperBoy, Bumpy/Pop UP, Rainbow Islands, Mario Bros... all of them allow you to play for a while before becoming too punishing :).

Oh Mummy - with the many lives and at least wiping out a mummy when you die, even the small kids should be able to go through a few tombs.

My kids like the Dizzy games. Only problem is that they need to read - and since they don't speak English, it's only possible if I can sit next to them.

That reminds me when I played Crafton and Xunk at 8 and I had to write everything in a notebook and ask my English teacher to translate it  ;D

That was better than the day I got my 464 and was trying to decipher how to load my one game (Into Oblivion) with my sister because we only knew one meaning for "key" in "...then press any key" :D

I don't remember what happened in the end, I'm pretty sure we banged a random key and it started loading :) .

Ok, first things first... buzzkill perspective but back in 84-90, 8 bit computers weren't exactly marketed towards six year old children, so obviously the games weren't going to be easy for their developing co-ordination. I also think it's unfair to say Mickey Mouse is a waste of a license. It's an arcade adventure and again, was targeted more for 11ups rather than 11downs. I was impressed with it, so were C+VG magazine at the time as they reviewed the CPC and the Amiga versions and the CPC actually got the higher rating. But when it comes to games, it's horses for Courses.

Games for six year olds... let me see
Well you just missed The Official Father Christmas, that game was pi
ss easy even a child could play it. Boring for adults though.
Strider II is a nice arcade platformer which has little to no difficulty at all and it's not exactly uber violent.
Turbo The Tortoise has a nice learning curve to it. I use to babysit my neighbours kids when I was 17 and they were able to play it. They were 6 and 8 respectively.
Gauntlet is a given. It's game you just can't lose on. The fact that it's two player makes it even more fun!
Also, give the Fun School games a run as well if you're stuck home schooling during lockdown.

As an idea, i can think of Ping pong, as it has a simple gameplay, and maybe wec lemans.
Also, there are some simple games in Cpcretrodev entries, low score games, maybe you can find something there.  (eg go away viking from this year contest).
Also, my games are really simple, you can take a look at https://amstradsakis.blogspot.com (https://amstradsakis.blogspot.com)

Dude, she's six. Are you purposely trying to teach her game rage?  ;)

I get game rage playing Arkanoid today... I'm 45 now!
I'm pretty sure Mark would like his CPC and monitor intact.

That's a good shout, as well as the Pacman emulator that came out a few years ago.

Fruity Frank here. :)

From experiences with my kids: Fruity Frank works, Arkanoid not. Too fast. I openend a thread some years ago, asking for a slow-downed version...

Bubble Bobble also works quite well.

I think the Dizzy games are good for kids, as has already been mentioned. Fast Food and Kwik Snax I think would be good choices for a 5 / 6 year old, not too difficult and with nice bright colourful graphics.

Same with Wriggler and Radzone. Big world to move around in, and you can pick your own way choosing the easiest screens.

Now that my six year old has discovered Minecraft, it's become very hard to get him to play anything else!

Same with our now 9-year old, discovered Minecraft at age 8. Have only played on PlayStation 3 though because Microsuck's payment system never works for us when trying to buy the PC Java version.

Got my kids on roland in the caves. Son (7) failed miserably. Daughter (5) first go, straight out! I was amazed.

She can't do it again though  ;D

I've always been a terrible video game player. The games I used to like when I was a kid were those not too punishing (not early at least): Saboteur, Super Wonder Boy in Monsterland, race games like Lotus Turbo Esprit Challenge or Super Cars, Turrican (I don't remember which one), Batty, Shackled, Skweek, Forgotten Worlds, Strider

As others have mentioned... Fruity Frank!
An absolutely brilliant game that is easy to get into and contains plenty of scope for lots of interesting strategies.
Back in the day I used to play it a lot with my (non-gamer) cousins, and they still remember it to this day!

Fruity Frank - excellent choice! Not only does it look great, but it can be as slow paced as you want and it does require some thinking...

Fruity Frank wasn't just "a game for kids" in our home. It was a game us kids could make the grown-ups play too. :)
Didn't happen often.
My mum played it the most, competing with the highscores. But I still remember one time I was diggin' through the level while holding down the fire-button, resulting it what looked like me simply bashing the purple baddie with my bare fists, and hearing my dad outburst: "Aaww.... how did he do that??" to my mum. :D
Holding down the fire-button means you'll throw the ball as soon as possible - which is when you enter a hallway. And if a baddie is standing there, he's toast.

Definitely one of the most played games for us back then.
It is of course a kind of clone of the arcade game "Mr. Do" which I saw some years earlier and which also instantly appealed to me - but I find Fruity Frank better.

I would have played it even more if the music hadn't been so annoying.

I like the music. Nice and simplistic. Not a whole lot happening.  :)

There was an entry for CPCRetroDev previously called Disassembler https://www.cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&num=15638 which is a very slow version of breakout.

My son (10) played Batman (the first Batman and my first CPC game by the way) and Boulder Dash a lot.
Besides his switch, we both enjoy Zelda on the + at the moment.

My other son (6) only likes watching us play. Sometimes he asks about watching (my) demos.
