Title: David Perry interview - re programming on the CPC
Post by: Xyphoe on 17:31, 30 May 14
There was an interview where David Perry was quoted as saying something like 'I got it [the Amstrad] scrolling in minutes' to one of the first game conversions he did for the Amstrad

Or it may have been an interview with an ex colleague (like Nick Bruty).

Does anyone remember this and got a link?

I'm working on a feature of David Perry games on the Amstrad. It's interesting how he got such good smooth scrolling so early on when so many failed.

So far I found -

I hope I'm not getting confused with something Richard Aplin said.

Dave Perry and Nick Bruty are one of the best teams on the CPC. Their games were always of a high standard with really nice graphics and smooth movement (although some of the games did appear to have char by char movement).

Their ninja turtles game had parallax too and it was fast. Impressive.

I believe they always used software scrolling too!

There's a pretty cool book called Grand Thieves and Tomb Raiders as an amazon download, which covers how british developers did well in video game. Dave Perry is covered from how he got started up to going to the US and becoming a gazillionaire. Its not exactly CPC specific but does give some insight to Mr Perry

great thread loved these guys.....

been reading this article fabulously entertaining just put so many smiles on my dial....

so many great sentences and paragraphs to quote from it but i love this one the most -

"The game, which we would eventually title Savage, is presently about a man who is chained up in a dungeon, soon to be horribly executed. The death sequence was going to show the man playing the Amstrad version of Quartet, followed by his brain exploding - but we thought this a bit anachronistic and unnecessarily cruel."

Savage was good though I'm not sure I enjoyed the first level much (and the lack of a jumping sprite really bugged the hell out of me cos he just looks like he's levitating and it's dumb) and I hated the second level but I really enjoyed the third one and kinda wished the whole game had been like that.

How did you get involved with Probe?

  • They challenged me to get Trantor the Last Stormtrooper working on the CPC. I got it scrolling in one night.
