I just tried out the magnificient Edge Grinder (128k) for the first time with my 6128 (Hxc). The game works ok, but the scrolling during gameplay is horrible. The screen jerks like crazy just like the refresh rate and framerate would not be compatible. The scolling text(s) before entering the gameplay work fine and for example Subhunter plays ok. My 6128 is hooked up to a projector which displays the vertical refresh rate to be 50.1. I haven't tried the game with a proper crt monitor/television.
I'd say my 6128 is ok, but is there something I have missed? Somekind of special setup for PAL?
The problem is that your projector doesn't like the CRTC 3 trick (for changing the Hsync width) used in this game. Better use a CRT and you will see a supersmooth scroll ;)
Ok, thanks SyX :) Time to get me a good/big crt then ;)
Good point with CRT is the Remanence which smoothen the visual.
Someone else on YouTube is having the same problem -
Edge grinder bad scroll (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MirRgTJflpM#ws)
He sent me a PM before uploading this vid, I'll find out if he's using a real CPC monitor etc

It doesnt look like it. The amstrad monitors had more of a curve in their plastic frame around the screen than is evident in that video, and at the bottom centre just under the display there's a barely visible smudge that is most likely a manufacturers logo, which wasnt where it was placed on the amstrad monitors I've seen. Still be interesting to know whether it's a CRT or flat panel and how it's connected though.

Thanks! Would it not matter what CRTC chip type he had in his 6128?

I dont believe so. When I've asked about it in the past the impression I've got is that there "may" be slight differences between CRTC, but primarily it would be down to how the display reacts to the changing HSYNC value. What that video seems to show is that the HSYNC is not being changed at all, something mr_lou found (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?topic=2724.msg30817#msg30817) with an LCD as well.
I finally managed to get me a decent 21" crt telly :) As expected, Edge Grinder is super smooth :D Awesome!

I have tested on type 0,1,2, and 4. Not yet tested on 3. All show the same result. Smooth scrolling with f5/f6 on register 3.
I see that Prehistorik 2 has some different game configurations, perhaps relating to different crtc types, but I don't know what they are for yet.
EDIT: All of these were tested with a Plus colour monitor. Same result. So the result definitely is monitor/tv specific.

Thank you for going to the trouble of testing it so many times! :)

your welcome, although it was part existing crtc testing I am doing to improve the emulation in arnold.

What are you using to connect the telly to the CPC?

Who would have thought an 8-bit game would be a driver for home appliances sales :D
