Title: Fastest racing games?
Post by: Optimus on 15:15, 12 March 14
I am wondering which CPC racing games where the fastest? And if they ever managed 50fps or even just 25fps?

I remember some titles from my childhood that I like, Chase HQ, Wec Le Mans, even Live & Let Die (well not a car racing, but technically similar). And maybe I have missed some more titles. Even the recent Burning Rubber is not as fast as Wec le Mans but still acceptable speed for CPC racing. I have seen more racing games that are choppy like hell (Lotus seem to me so and it's even in very small window without visibility). I also remember kinda slow Stunt Car Racing but interesting one with polygons. Nothing like it before.

Are there some more racing games with fast enough speeds that I am missing? I wanna play them.

I am wondering what would be the best technique to draw roads and signs/trees/poles in the sides, seem to be already too many stuff for the little CPC to handle.

p.s. And one final question, there was some youtube video of someone coding a new racing engine for CPC, kinda like chase hq graphics. I can't find this video, where is it again? I think I read the news somewhere in this forum but can't find the post.

For me hands down it has to be this:

Nigel Mansells Grand Prix Amstrad CPC (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSU_zhBZOSQ#)

The speed on this is incredible! Although I'm not much into the genre, I really want to making a racing game on the CPC that has this speed, but with added hills and bumps. It would be great if it had tilting screen similar to the game "Power Drift" which gives it a roller coaster feel.

Oh, so there is an older version of Nigel Mansell. Well yes, this is a much better one.

Indeed. I'm so impressed on how the programmers managed to simulate such a feeling of speed.

I prefer to think of it as "the original" version myself  ;)  Same developers made Super Cycle which is also fast, though simple.  Dont play on the easiest setting though or you'll breeze through it.  I thought Power Drift was pretty fast for what was going on, Continental Circus too, but not that much stuff track side.  Crazy Cars 2 was nice and fast as well, but the car has an annoying habit of exploding on contact with small posts.

Yes exactly, thanks!!! Looks like how Lotus should be.

I'll have to check out the CPC version of Elektra Glide as I can only find the Atari version. It looks like it suffers the same issues as the CPC version of Super Cycle, where reaching top speed gives the illusion of the red and white curb moving backwards.

3D Grand Prix doesn't feel as silky smooth or fast as NMG; maybe because the sprites are a lot bigger on 3D Grand PRIX...

Here are a few that spring to mind:

Miami Cobra GT http://www.cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&num=1408 (http://www.cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&num=1408)
Future Bike Simulator http://www.cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&onglet=dumps&num=935 (http://www.cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&onglet=dumps&num=935)
(both by the same developer)

Chevy Chase

Although they all kind of cheat!

The use of Spectrum screen dimensions is normal (and useful for a frame rate boost), but these 3 games only seem to update half the screen (in a vertical sense).

It's a very clever illusion, and doesn't affect the gameplay in any meaningful way anyhow.

Just looking at the Nigel Mansell game; the hud is absolutely huge! Bigger than the game screen itself. I do love the rear view mirrors. A really nice touch and good use of the hud.
The letter box gameplay area is similarly used on Lotus Esprite Turbo, but the hud is not as useful as NM's:

Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge - Amstrad CPC - Gameplay part 1 by Ataru'75 - [048a] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsK6s361AcQ#)

This doesn't have the speed of NM, but does have dips and hills. However - the dips and hills are very distracting as it obscures the track.
I always thought that mode 1* graphics would be faster than mode 0, but it does not seem the case. What it does offer is high res and more frames for sprite animations.

*The mode 1 graphics on Lotus are really and clean.
