Hey, I was reading a preview of Gazza 2 soccer in a C+VG issue yesterday, so I looked around for it. Did it ever come out after all, or was it only for the normal CPC series?
Here's a CPC version vid, btw - cheers, @Xyphoe (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=109)
I don't think it came out, but if you find it and sell it then you could retire ;)
Yeah, that's what I thought too, but I didn't remember seeing it discussed...
Let's take a look in the attic!
I remember Gaza II was tested in some french magazines like Amstrad 100% but was poorly marked.
could be interesting to have the full story about those reviews.
http://www.cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&onglet=test&num=4072 (http://www.cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&onglet=test&num=4072)
Looked nice enough though... Strangely, in the C+VG preview they said the ball never left the ground (plus it was missing fouls, penalties and throw-ins looked like kick-ins but anyway), but in the CPC version the ball does leave the ground.
GX4000 version seems to have been in Fullscreen. :o
On CPC as often, they tried to get the impression screen is full, they put the border the same colour as terrain, but it is actually not good for gameplay as you fail to see screen/playfield's reals borders. (as for KickOff on ST).
But yeah, looks better on screenshots in magazines I guess.
Post edit :*
if screenshots are accurate, it seems to be in fullscreen... or else the thing they used for screenshots does its own screenborder.
were the sprites magnified ? they look bigger... can't really tell.
Ah yes, that too!
All this talk of CVG reminds me I have some I need to sell.
Herts a review from Mean Machines (my favourite multi format and sega mag) be sure to read the pdf
http://www.meanmachinesmag.co.uk/review/80/gazzas-football.php (http://www.meanmachinesmag.co.uk/review/80/gazzas-football.php)
I remember seeing it advertised or at least reading so many reviews that until today I was convinced it had been released
I wish it were. I am not a footie fan must loved Manchester united Europe, but the gazza II screenshots always better and more arcadey.
The 2 abandoned gx carts I'd love to see are Gazza 2 and Toki.

Amstrad Action reviewed it IIRC.

Yes, issue 65.
If only they had 'forgotten' to return the review cart. :(

Typical. I have issue 64 and 66.
At least I have them all saved as pdfs

If you're selling CVG issues from between 1987 - 1995, I'd take them off your hands for the right price (please!)
AA def reviewed Gazza 2 on cartridge but I don't recall seeing Amstrad Computer User review it.
But I do remember a conversation I had with a friend in London back in the day who had a Plus machine.. He told me he tried to find Gazza 2 on cartridge (there was a shop where we lived which sold carts) but he never could and had to settle for it on disc.

ACU the magazine that gave almost zero coverage to the launch of the new Plus machines as I recall. A magazine so crooked they reviewed other versions. of games and blatantly used the wrong screenshots just to get an exclusive.

Makes you wonder why the official magazine would do that. You'd think they would push it, and I can bet that ACU's lack of coverage was one of the reasons it bombed - albeit only a small one.

If I'm not mistaken ACU stopped being the "official" CPC magazine in '86 or so? Was published by different companies after that...
Amstrad sold it late 80's
Mid-80s from the looks of the Wiki article.
It was still marked as the Official magazine until the end..
(A laugh - they printed a higher quality shot of Mega Twins on the C64 which was better than what the C64 mags used!)
How about reviewing games that NEVER came out like Judge Dredd, Amazing Spiderman, Rimrunner and Mega Twins..

Some of you may not have seen Xyphoe's thread (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/games/help!-need-a-scan-of-amstrad-action-issue-65-deadline!/) asking for a scan of
AA's review of the cartridge version of
Gazza II. I've posted a link to my own scan of the review on that thread.
AA seemed to like it quite a lot. I'd love to know why the cartridge version was never released as it looked pretty impressive with good use of the extended palette.
HEH!
What timing... I guess not many people check the gx4000.co.uk site I do, but I posted an article about this very thing yesterday morning! It collects everything I've found so far about the game....

I really liked it on disc despite not being a fan of footie games.. would love to try it on cart.

Thank you again for that. It wasn't just for the article on the gx4000.co.uk I've linked above, but for something else I'm helping work on - I'm not sure it'll be used but I'll be able to say more in a few weeks.

Look at those screenshots from AA. Notice anything odd about them? They are photographs and not the usual screen grabs that AA used. Not only that, but it's not even photos to the same quality AA was doing a few years before.
Now at this time I believe Future only had 1 set of capture gear that the mags shared on a rota. So did someone from Empire bring a cart in one day so AA could play it and then take it away again afterwards the same day resulting in the quickie screenshots or did AA play the game elsewhere on a development system.
Either way its very odd.

Well spotted and observed.
Someone needs to get in touch with Adam Waring!

I re-read the review and see what you mean. The process for taking photos of screenshots was based on a process developed by a bloke called John Cura who photographed TV programs from 1947 - 1968 (he died 1969) and the Gazza 2 photographs looked very low quality compared to some pics from Mr. Cura.

The point being that by then AA were using proper screen grabbing gear rather than photos so why does the Gazza 2 review use photos?
As one theorised, they might have only been able to get photographs if needed quickly OR Empire could have supplied the photos themselves. The screenshots in their adverts look like photographs.

Man how much I hated it when Amstrad Action started with those screengrabs. Same problems with screenshot-quality as Retro Gamer have today. The photos was always better
Sorry it's not the proper enhanced version for the GX4000 / PLUS, but you can now play the original version on the GX4000 ;D
I've just posted it in the other thread 8)
