Title: In built cheat for Blagger
Post by: milamber on 09:39, 17 April 11
Did anyone ever notice the cheat mode hidden inside this classic platform game? One day after losing all my lifes on level 3 ( The Mad Hatters Party ) i sat watching the demo mode that flicks through the levels and decided to press random groups of keys on the keyboard out of frustration.  You can imagine my surprise to suddenly find Mr Blagger stood waiting on the level entitled - A close shave!I used this odd method to play all the levels although never finished it outright. It doesnt seem to work via emulator though (Caprice)

Many ingame cheats like "press A,B,C and D together" dont work in most emulators.
This is because the CPC's keyboard clash and also because a regular PC can just handle 3 keystrokes max. simulteanously.
On CPC, when you type and hold F,R,E the letter D is added, too.
JavaCPC provides a virtual keyboard, where you can normally press the single keys or also select a range of keys and press them all together by one button click.
It also has the keyboard clash included.

The keyboard clash is also explained on this site:
http://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/Programming:Keyboard_scanning
You find some info about it.
Over the info is a keyboard matrix table.
The clash works like this:
Find 3 keys in this matrix.
Combine them and the 4th key to build a rectangle is the clash result!

E.g. Find F,R,E keys in this table.
You'll see that these 3 keys + the D key build a rectangle...

A bit off topic but then again:
Reading this made me remember that i once took my copy of Batman - the Movie to a friend house who had a 664. I had a 464 and on that the E+D+2+0+9 cheat work perfectly .. but on the 664 with a tape drive attached externally it didnt? The game worked nicely on the 664 tho .. just not the keypress. Always wondered about that. Like was it a keyboard difference or because the of the external tape drive (or perhaps his 664 has a loose key?).

Years later in the 90s I found a similar trick with Doom on the 32x.  ( hope im not abusing the rules here folks )

Plugging a six button pad into player port with auto fire engaged topped up your ammo, energy etc.

I'm not sure who the author is thanking, but "V100587" probably refers to the final version of the game being completed on the 10th of May 1987.
