I've always thought there was more than one version of this game.
Last night I prooved myself correct.

There are 3 versions I have found so far.

One version has "Score" and then the score number underneath.

Second has "S:" and score and some other info on the same line.

Both of these versions have the same "bright and cheerful" music.

Third version has different music to the two above (found on hit pak 6 volume 3).
This is the version I remember, I am 80% sure that I had this one on tape.
This version has more dark and moody music.

Are there more versions?

Huh... imagine that! Interesting...

Hey, you're right!  My brother had the game on disk, the first one you described, and I recently got myself the game because I liked it, but it was a tape version, the budget re-release by Players they just called "Eagles Nest" on the cover, though the game & load screen have the full name.  (with the curious choice of Atari ST screen shots on the back of a single cassette inlay!)

I hadn't got around to trying it until you just mentioned it, and it *is* different.  Different music, different score line, and doesn't make the border go mental when you pause.  A bit disappointing in a way, because it's not quite the game I remember, but I guess I'll "let them off", because they did improve it, as in that first version you needed to keep pausing all the time just to see your hits & key count!

The cheat also doesn't work on the cassette version ;)
I remember trying it and it didn't work.

Ah, I'd forgotten there was one!  Now you've ruined my carefully reasoned out justification for making do with a tape version!    :'(

I have the hit pack version on disk... never tried it though as I always played via emulation or with the original disk version. This is good news indeed, as I've always liked this game. Can anyone shed more light on the dark and moodier version? Or any version for that matter.

I know there were two versions of Top gun, one without music, the other with. Wonder what else is out there?

Well, i guess its quite common that disc and tape versions of the same game are a bit different from each other. Like Commando tape version dosnt have a loading screen, but the disc version does.

Then there is the 464 to 6128 convertions. Must be a couple of those out there. Like games like "Way of the exploding fist" where i got a "464 only" version but there is also a disc/6128 version too.

Of cause it could be its just the loading/protection that are different (or makes a game "464 only"). Like  Ghostbusters has both a normal unprotected "block" loading version and a speedlock one too.

Trying to remember a game that had a genuine difference ingame, but cant really recall any, but i guess its normal because just like everyone else i could only afford one version of a game back then.

My tape version of Commando I swear had a loading screen, it was the Encore re-release. This was on the 464 loading.

I tend to concur with Xyphoe here. I think I had ITEN in my 464 days, and I *do* remember the loading screen...

Hi,

1942 has two different releases, one with a music in the menu, and the other one without (hit 6 pack 1 or 2, I don't remember well). Surprisingly, the game length on the disc is the same ! (42ko).

It is claimed that this game contained quite a lot of it's source code.
They saved a big chunk of memory and didn't bother to save the actual size. Maybe it was because they didn't want people to know the real size of the game ;)

But interesting, I never knew 1942 had 2 releases.

There are more games than I realised that had differences.

flyspy had 2 releases, one with a fast loader (multicolour border) and one without.
I think the game was the same.

I think the original Elite release (with bigger black rectangle plastic case with the inlay inside the sleeve of the case) didn't have loading screen.

Then again, the Elite cassette version i have of Commando dosnt have a loading screen  :)

Oh, i also remembered that there is  2 different versions of Double Dragon and DD2 too.

Then there is Bride of Frankenstein that has been "re-released" as Frankenstein Junior and they even changed the main char (and loading screens).

Also a couple of country re-releases. Like Phantis was renamed Game Over 2. Then there is a whole bunch of sports re-releases (aka some spanish game gets a new name and resold in uk).

Heh, this is an old topic but I hadn't seen it before it got bumped today.
The budget version I have on tape has the 'moody music' (if you mean the bright cheerful one being the one based on a famous film track I think 633 Squadron)  and in fact I was working on a tracker mod version for the remake I was doing of Eagles Nest back in 2006.  http://carnivac.co.uk/temp/Eagles2006themev3.zip

Actually got a more recent screenshot of the game from Feb 2013 here too.  I had been rewriting it to be low res (my older version was 640x480 higher res but I much preferred the 320x240 looking low res and the scale of the view around the player sprite looked closer in the low res one to the original game) and this screenshot is actually demonstrating the auto-tiling in that, in the level maker, the walls were just one block, the tables another block, the rugs another block and the engine ran through them all before the mission starts making each type connect to others of the same type properly and then add a transparent shadow layer on things so I didn't have to spend ages doing it all manually.

Favorite CPC games: Count Duckula 3, Oh Mummy Returns, RoboCop Resurrection, Tankbusters Afterlife

Wow, this screenshot looks just brilliant!!! I want it! :D
