Brother came over today for a few hours, heard him swearing at the Sega Megadrive game - Pitfall and thus told him to play the Amstrad instead.

Thankfully the HxC worked a treat and he was playing Arknoid for ages, couldn't get him off it to go out  8)

Haha, that's one game that really have that CPC mood. Nice representation of the middle 80".Now I think of it, there are paddles (like Pong controllers) for the C64. One version looks really like the VCS tennis one. Would be nice to use it on the Amstrad. Or maybe there are paddles on the Amstrad.

Edit: I had those VCS paddles...
Just tested on the C64 with Arkanoid 1. There's an option to play with paddles. It does improve the gameplay, much fun, less stress, feel very seventies too, but it's accurate. Really great.

was watching an Arkanoid comparison video earlier after seeing how atrocious the DS game was.  What I didn't realise before was how much better the sound is on the CPC version is to the other 8-bits.   I always liked it when I was a kid but now I seen it compared to the others I'm even more a fan of it.   The music has a certain 'richness' (for lack of a beter word) to it that the others don't.  The Spectrum one sounds quite feeble (which is odd cos often those two systems sound quite similar) and the C64 version just sounded kinda squelchy and overdone (particulary the sound effects).   Obviously the graphics on the CPC version were the best out of the 8-bits too.

Arkanoid on the CPC is almost like playing on an arcade machine. Sadly the routine that makes the ball bounce is not well done and the ball can get stuck on an infinite bouncing loop sometimes.

If i remember well (or was in Arkanoid II or it's my imagination :P), you could enter and exit from the pause mode during one of those "infinite loops" and the ball could scape the "infinite loop" :)

In an Arkanoid clone for Amiga that i made a lot of moons ago, i simply saved in memory the ball trajectory and check for those infinite loops, and when i got one them, i sent the ball in a random direction, jejeje.

The CPC joystick port is not enough for those kind of devices (paddle, spinners, trackballs, ...), it was my biggest dissapointment about the CPC, because i loved playing in arcades and the VCS (specially breakout games, but driving and even bowling or billiard games with paddle support felt so natural), i never have the same satisfaction using the mouse for playing those games during my Amiga years.

I owned the X-Arcade track ball as I won it with the Dual X-Arcade joysticks.  Can't say I ever liked it though.  Never much cared for trackballs in the arcades and certainly didn't like having this huge bloody trackball for home use cluttering up the place.   Eventually sold it.

Can't say I recall any time the ball got stuck in a loop on CPC Arkanoid and I used to play it loads and still do from time to time.  The only thing I recall stopping me playing was usually the third level I think it was.  Bitch of a level.

The arcade version never enter in infinite looooooooooooooooooooooooooooop.
So, I suggest to check its code to avoid that and be more accurate for "Arkanoid like" games.

I guess that the solution may be changing the ball bounce angle as it gets faster.

The ball in arkanoid gets stuck in a loop depending of the level, there are levels that you have a lot of possibilities that the ball get stuck, the more time you are on the level, the more possibilities are.

it's well know that arkanoid  have a bug that makes the ball getting stuck.

I wonder if someone with the knowledge can patch the game and make some thing like Syx said.

(and yes, the third level is a fuc... bitch level, there are a lot of following levels much more easy that the third level)
