Hello. It's a-me, Jean-Mario!
I and my bros, Onevision & Lunoka, are pleased to offer you this new game for your CPC.
It's an overhauled version of the Ocean game Mario Bros from 1987, which was another sad-looking Speccy port.
It now sports new graphics, musics, and an improved code.
Have fun !

Gfx: Onevision
Music: Lunoka
Codefix: JMB
Special thanks to Roudoudou for providing a high-quality sample, using his tool WAV2AY.
Muchas gracias to CNG for his fabulous music player & tracker: CHIPNSFX.

Impressive !

Thanks a lot & hats off for the result 👌😎

Gryzor

Looks gorgeous, but so hard!

PRO TIP #1: You can pass under a Boo when he's leaping! This requires an accurate timing, with a little anticipation.

Jean-Marie

PRO TIP #2: By knocking an enemy on the brink of a platform, you won't need to climb it in order to put him down.

JCORR76

Superb work congratulations. Thanks so much for sharing!  :D

Gryzor

Not a Mario can, but that sprite is beautiful.

Very nice! Thank you for this overworked game!  :) :) :)

Very nice! This game deserved a so much better version than the awful one we suffer since so many years!

some question and ideas.
  - Is there a pause mode? If yes, if it's possible to remap it on the P key to be available on GX4000 as the pause button?
  - It would be nice to skip the second screen (with Ocean/Nintendo logo) right after the end of the little tune rather than waiting for fire.
  - I know I'm hard to please  8)  , but a rolling demo like on NES/Arcade would be so smart!

Nevertheless, this is what brightens up a day. You do this again whenever you want guys  :P

This is an encoded message, for your eyes only  ;) : "Mario is longing for Giana"

1) There was no Pause button in the original. I thought about implementing one, but that would have required hacking the controls, and potentially slowing down responsiveness. Anyway, there's no more memory (89 bytes left only!).
2) No dice! Ben spent some hard time to draw those logos, and I had to redraw them under the emulator!
You will watch them and rejoice  :P
3) Memory full!

I promise to try and play this ASAP after work :D
It looks pretty nice!

An immediate thought: Nintendo and homebrews, usually it's a BAD mariage. Taking this as reference: https://www.businessinsider.com/super-mario-bros-commodore-64-game-shut-down-by-nintendo-2019-4?op=1

Just to play it safe -- don't you want to re-release this game with another character (I would personally replace Mario by... Amstrad's Roland!), rename the game to something like "Jumping Roland", and finally, delete this thread, too (and create new one).

But I'm probably taking too many precautions here...

My current project is Sonic GX, a remake of Sonic the Hedgehog for the awesome Amstrad GX-4000 game console!

Same, I'm going to try that right after work. I'm eager to...

Damn ... :( I had early thoughts about it right from the start, my first training being IP lawyer, but damn if they contact us for that :( ...

I don't want to scare you. The Amstrad is an aging machine, but I thought the same in 2019 about the C64. I think the risk is minimal, but still, there is a risk.

On a side note, Sega is different story, they proved to play nice for years with homebrew scene and they are super cool 8)

If they want us to delete the download links, we will comply. By then, most people will have downloaded the game, and will share it off the radar, by email or whatever. This would create a Streisand effect, and some very good publicity !
Also, I'm no lawyer mind you, but technically this is an Ocean game we have hacked, not a Nintendo game.
They sold the license to Ocean, but the game is authored by Ocean, not Nintendo.
Not sure I would win before a court, and I don't wanna know  ;D

Well, they did not "sell the license to Ocean", they (Nintendo) asked Ocean in 1987 to make a conversion of their game to 8-bit computers. I don't know how it applies nowadays, but what I know, is that Mario license is still strong & popular, while Ocean is dead.  ;)

Anyway, it's too late to stop the train now: https://www.indieretronews.com/2023/09/mario-bros-overhauled-this-is-best.html

As you said: removing the download links on demand should be enough ;-)
Again, it's probably me being too cautious here.

No problem, I understand of course, it was just details. I tried it quickly on emulator at lunch time. I can't wait to try it on my GX4000 this evening 8)

And I'm sure that Nintendo will tell nothing about this "little" upgrade around a game already existing on CPC. Don't touch anything! Please, I don't want to play as Roland  :P
