Hello. It's a-me, Jean-Mario!
I and my bros, Onevision & Lunoka, are pleased to offer you this new game for your CPC.
It's an overhauled version of the Ocean game Mario Bros from 1987, which was another sad-looking Speccy port.
It now sports new graphics, musics, and an improved code.
Have fun !
Gfx: Onevision
Music: Lunoka
Codefix: JMB
Special thanks to Roudoudou for providing a high-quality sample, using his tool WAV2AY (https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/programming/(tool)-wav-melody-to-psg-conversion/msg229395/#msg229395).
Muchas gracias to CNG for his fabulous music player & tracker: CHIPNSFX (http://cngsoft.no-ip.org/chipnsfx.htm).

Here is a GX4000 CPR version for
@iXien and his cronies.

Wait, wait! What's this ????
And you show me this while I'm at work. It's so cruel :P
I will have a look at this ASAP 8)
Impressive !
Thanks a lot & hats off for the result 👌😎
Looks gorgeous, but so hard!
PRO TIP #1: You can pass under a Boo when he's leaping! This requires an accurate timing, with a little anticipation.
PRO TIP #2: By knocking an enemy on the brink of a platform, you won't need to climb it in order to put him down.
Superb work congratulations. Thanks so much for sharing! :D
Not a Mario can, but that sprite is beautiful.
Very nice! Thank you for this overworked game! :) :) :)
Very nice! This game deserved a so much better version than the awful one we suffer since so many years!
some question and ideas.
- Is there a pause mode? If yes, if it's possible to remap it on the P key to be available on GX4000 as the pause button?
- It would be nice to skip the second screen (with Ocean/Nintendo logo) right after the end of the little tune rather than waiting for fire.
- I know I'm hard to please 8) , but a rolling demo like on NES/Arcade would be so smart!
Nevertheless, this is what brightens up a day. You do this again whenever you want guys :P

1) There was no Pause button in the original. I thought about implementing one, but that would have required hacking the controls, and potentially slowing down responsiveness. Anyway, there's no more memory (89 bytes left only!).
2) No dice! Ben spent some hard time to draw those logos, and I had to redraw them under the emulator!
You will watch them and rejoice :P
3) Memory full!
I promise to try and play this ASAP after work :D
It looks pretty nice!
An immediate thought: Nintendo and homebrews, usually it's a BAD mariage. Taking this as reference: https://www.businessinsider.com/super-mario-bros-commodore-64-game-shut-down-by-nintendo-2019-4?op=1
Just to play it safe -- don't you want to re-release this game with another character (I would personally replace Mario by... Amstrad's Roland!), rename the game to something like "Jumping Roland", and finally, delete this thread, too (and create new one).
But I'm probably taking too many precautions here...

Damn ... :( I had early thoughts about it right from the start, my first training being IP lawyer, but damn if they contact us for that :( ...

I don't want to scare you. The Amstrad is an aging machine, but I thought the same in 2019 about the C64. I think the risk is minimal, but still, there is a risk.
On a side note, Sega is different story, they proved to play nice for years with homebrew scene and they are super cool 8)

If they want us to delete the download links, we will comply. By then, most people will have downloaded the game, and will share it off the radar, by email or whatever. This would create a Streisand effect, and some very good publicity !
Also, I'm no lawyer mind you, but technically this is an Ocean game we have hacked, not a Nintendo game.
They sold the license to Ocean, but the game is authored by Ocean, not Nintendo.
Not sure I would win before a court, and I don't wanna know ;D
Well, they did not "sell the license to Ocean", they (Nintendo) asked Ocean in 1987 to make a conversion of their game to 8-bit computers. I don't know how it applies nowadays, but what I know, is that Mario license is still strong & popular, while Ocean is dead. ;)
Anyway, it's too late to stop the train now: https://www.indieretronews.com/2023/09/mario-bros-overhauled-this-is-best.html
As you said: removing the download links on demand should be enough ;-)
Again, it's probably me being too cautious here.
That Mario sprite is fantastic. :)
Nice and smooth game - well done!

No problem, I understand of course, it was just details. I tried it quickly on emulator at lunch time. I can't wait to try it on my GX4000 this evening 8)
And I'm sure that Nintendo will tell nothing about this "little" upgrade around a game already existing on CPC. Don't touch anything! Please, I don't want to play as Roland :P

as I imagine it is a 64k version, is there a CDT version available?

Not yet. I'll try to make one.
I've made a WAV file, using Caprice64. I know there's a way to convert it to CDT, but that's beyond my knowledge. :-[

Woah, thanks. That was fast :o
It took me ten minutes to load for testing ;D
The GX4000 version is sweet :)

The ZX Spectrum version of
Mario Bros. can still be downloaded from Spectrum Computing (https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/entry/3035/ZX-Spectrum/Mario_Bros) (and before that, World of Spectrum). My memories are vague, but I recall a long time ago that the IDSA demanded that WoS remove several games from their archive, one of which was
Mario Bros., and Martijn van der Heide (the WoS administrator) declined on the grounds that it was an Ocean game rather than a Nintendo game - and both Martijn and Spectrum Computing were/are usually very compliant with regard to removing downloads of games due to copyright issues.

CSW2CDT (http://cngsoft.no-ip.org/csw2cdt.htm) is my tool of choice for converting WAV files to CDT cassette images.

Interesting! If we follow their logic, we should remove
Donkey Kong from all databases (including yours!), since it's a Nintendo game too. Sometimes, they use bluff and one just needs to answer "No".
Besides, it is true that the Ocean company is long dead, but there are still
right-holders. And if they grant us the right to modify their piece of software (especially since we make no commercial usage of it), that should silence them.
In our case, that would remain complicated, because we use the music from the NES, and sprites from the SNES. I guess it depends on how the contract was worded at the time...
I've just worked out a fast-loading tape version, using "monoblocks". It loads in 2 mins 20s.
I confirm ! I just tested this CDT version.
Loading is amazing !
Nice work Jean-Marie. :)
Enjoying this. I liked the Mario Bros bonus games in Super Mario Bros 3 back in the heyday.
Ocean made a balls up of the original as opposed to the awesome Donkey Kong.
Well done to all involved!

Hi everyone!
I had some free time tonight and I tried to run this fantastic remake on the original machine (I use an M4 card to load the games), but unfortunately it crashes after the first screen... ::)
Am I the only one experiencing this problem?
Thanks for any answers/advice! :-*
It's still your PSU, just delivers too few Volts.

Mine plays OK on M4 too.

My apologies, I have the same problem as you have Mr. DVG : just after the title screen and the "It's a-me, Mario !" the CPC resets.
Flashing the CPR from this thread with the command ùCTRUP,"[name].cpr" works just fine though.
I've made Jean Marie aware of the problem for the DSK version.

Thank you for your interest!
It would be great to have a working .dsk version, unfortunately the limitation of the M4 is that you can only flash one game at a time and at the moment the slot is occupied by another game which unfortunately does not have the .dsk format. :-\
I stay tuned to this channel to find out if there will be future developments regarding this update!
Thanks again! :-*
My son ask me why we can't play yet this amazing game to GX4000? I told him that his father is not so smart  to convert it to .gpr If somebody shoud help the father with a download link, really appreciate
