Maze Mania: http://cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&num=1379 (http://cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&num=1379)
For years this game annoyed me, because there were occasions where you had to go over a tile twice. I thought this was a bug. Then I was watching this video:
MAZE MANIA COMMODORE 64 C64 HEWSON CONSULTANTS CLASSIC RETRO VIDEO GAME - (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84AMqkqAsD4)
And it twigged. Its not because of a bug. In the C64 version (which does look much better than the CPC version, but audio is really bad) some tiles turn a different colour and you need to go over them twice. Why could they not have indicated this somehow on the CPC version?
That's a rather major omission!
Still, the game looks really annoying even in the C64 version ...
Always enjoyed this game , I also thought it was a bug for years , then recently figured it might be part of the gameplay, Interesting to find out the actual reason though, cheers.
I was reading the manual scan on CPC power, and it does mention that certain tiles need to be gone over twice or from a specific direction. Still though, it doesn't explain why they are indicated in the C64 version but not CPC.
Such a terrible speccy port that they forgot to add the third colour.
AA were probably looking at this game from a Full Price Perspective when they gave it 60% when they reviewed this in Issue 56, their main problems were Graphics, Not much Variety & another run of the mill Maze Game.
To be honest I quite enjoy playing it and can get over the Spectrum Graphics in it and I even thought the detail of the Maze Walls is pretty cool - certainly a lot better than the 36% AA gave for graphics. Though I never brought the game and only came to play the game because AA gave it away with Rana Rama which I thought made it one of their better earlier covertapes. :) I guess the other reason why AA gave Maze Mania a low score maybe due to Skweek, which is another similar kind of game I haven't played, though obviously the screenshots and detail of the graphics is very good and I can only assume the variety in Skweek is exceptional, maybe I would of have a different view had Skweek been on a Covertape? :D
