Title: Most characteristic games?
Post by: Gryzor on 16:06, 18 February 13
Hello!

One of our newer members, Manos, mentioned a retro-themed cafe the other day. So I visited it and had a blast! However, their 6128 is a bit unwell. It drive has trouble reading many discs. Belt changed, heads cleaned, works for a while then stops. Those discs are quite old, but my own 6128 can read them just fine so I guess that drive is just old and tired and can't handle unreliable discs so well.

So I said, heck, I can copy some games onto newer discs and bring them over...

The question is, which games would be ideal for such a place? Adventures, for instance, are out. Can you suggest some titles the patrons would enjoy?

Also, while it never really caught my attention a whole lot, Boulder Dash is probably also one people remember.

Donkey Kong (don't forget to use my fixed version ;) ), Arkanoid, Moon Cresta, Classic Axiens, ... all the typical arcades will be perfect for casual games :)

Fixed version? Tell me more. What's wrong with the non-fixed version?

How about the new release of Bubble Bobble? And Star Sabre, etc?

And Gryzor, of course!

Chuckie Egg and Manic Miner are essential. Also Roland on the Ropes, Harrier Attack and Oh Mummy are classic CPC games, everyone knows and relates to them cos they were free with it.

I'd suggest Knight Lore, Spindizzy and the Dizzy games but they would count as adventures, unless you meant text adventures.

So many easy to pick up games that are really characterisric too, like:

Paperboy, Bombjack, Oh Mummy, Trantor, Antiriad, Elevator Action, Turrican, Chase HQ, Yie Ar Kung Fu, Stormlord, Ghostbusters, Star Wars, N.E.X.U.S, AMC, Druid, Sim City, Hostages, Operation Wolf, Castle Master, Light Force etc.

And it would be a sin if you didnt get some nice co-up/vs two player action going as well with:
Ikari Warriors, Target Renegade, Island of Dr Destructo, Bruce Lee, Barbarian (the head chopping one by Palace), 1943, IK+, Super Sprint, Gauntlet, Mario Bros, Vindicators (the tank one, not the soldier one)...

Then there is the new games. Might take both old & new version of R-type and Bubble Bobble so they can see the difference. Sub Hunter, Magical Drop, Dead on Time, LaLa Prologue, Edge Grinder, Sodoku Master, BeTiled and a whole bunch of others (especially spanish) that has escaped my mind this very second.

Since its a 128k machine you might as well show off some of the larger games as well, even if its just to hear the samples in Robocop etc. Like Hero Quest, Orion Prime, Prince of Persia, ZapTBallz, B.A.T, Iron Lord, Shinobi, North & South, Pirates!, Addams Family, Defender of the Crown, Baby Jo ..

Then there is the "special" ones like Rockstar Ate My Hamster, How to be a complete Bastrad, Werewolves of London, Elite, Little Computer People, Lemmings ..

@Gryzor: The problem with the 3" drive in the Retro cafe can be a small difference in the alignment of the head over the track.

Easy solution. You guys get an external drive and connect it to this CPC, then just copy the drives to new discs ON THAT CPC which shall read the discs later on.

(Once I had a similar problem). Good luck! :)

Ikari Warriors or Commando.

The drive may just need some grease.

I can't believe nobody's said "Skweek" and "Sorcery" yet!

"Crafton & Xunk / Get Dexter" is another notable French game, and "After the war", "Nebulus", the first "Renegade" and "Stardust" are worth a shot too.

Nice patch.
I remember seeing that the Donkey Kong world record for the CPC looked quite beatable.  Twin Galaxies website is down so can't verify it now, but would make a good challenge for the cafe.
And if anybody here hasn't seen King of Kong (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0923752/) then whip yourself to sleep for being such a bad boy and then torrent stream a legitimate version of it immediately.

I had left this thread to gestate a bit and gather all the titles together. Nice suggestions, although more come to mind :)

@TFM, indeed, I'm getting an HxC for them, although I replaced their drive, too!

Thank you all for the suggestions, now I'm really tempted to play them myself :D

Harvey Headbanger is fun, Elite, the Sentinel

Not really looking for 'fun' games, but for *characteristic* ones to display on the CPC - I figured this makes more sense, though there'll be a few titles to show off, of course (Batman Forever, RType128, BB4CPC...). But yeah, Elite fits the bill!

Mmm Savage and Trantor, hell yeah.

Driller is kinda slow for a public environment...:

I just watched that movie, Billy Mitchell is a complete and utter cunt. Cowardly and weasly like his Eastenders namesake. I felt so sorry for Steve Wiebe, at least he had the balls to play IRL. Still at least he got his world record in the end and is still above Mitchell in the chart.

I agree the CPC score is definitely beatable. Give it a bit of time and you might see my name on there.

Haha, I wish! I've been to Athens a number of times as my grandparents used to live in Schinias, near Marathonas, but I wont be visiting any time soon I'm afraid.
