New HFE Files Trantor

steve

I find it odd that these games were intended to run on a machine with 64k or 128k ram yet they take up over 900KB on the hxc, we have only few GB of space on these cards, we should not waste it on inefficient file storage. ;) ;D

Bryce

The files are uncompressed images of the disk. The µP isn't powerful enough or have enough program space to de-compress and emulate a floppy controller at the same time. There's always compromises you have to make to designs.

"Only a few GB"? :D 1GB would hold 1100 games. My dirt-cheap 8GB card sits there, totally underused!

steve

Half that capacity is lost because of the 8-bit access mode, we need the rest to hold all the 512KB CPC+ games that will be created over the next few years, not to mention the 4MB games needed to make use of the 4MB ram expansions that are the next logical step after the 512KB capacity becomes too small. ;D

Gryzor

Let's just say I'll be very happy when the first game is released to occupy a 2GB card for streaming data :D

I think you are mixing CF IDE access with SD SPI access. :)

What is the purpose of attaching these HFE files here?
Are they special somehow? Something rare we can't get other places and convert ourselves?

Sykobee (Briggsy)

It sounds like we need a designated location for these files that are suitable for the HXC, and an index to it from the HXC wiki page maybe.

dcdrac

Just uploading them to here I have not found many places that have HFE files.

Gryzor

Unless the dsk files these HFEs have come from are somehow special I see no reason in sharing them... anyone can make them. My opinion, of course.

And you all seem to be forgetting about the Downloads section :D
