Title: Paperboy
Post by: chinnyhill10 on 21:29, 14 May 14
Just been talking Paperboy with @retroremakes on Twitter and was wondering if anyone from the community had ever considering sprucing up the game so it has sound?

It's actually a nice conversion but the lack of sound is a real let down. Rumour has it that the programmers had run out of memory, but would anyone consider updating it to a 128k game which had sound? In the grand scheme of things it can't be a huge job compared to the larger scale remakes we see.

If Spectrum users can CHANGE the graphics on the Hobbit adventure, then sure CPC users can do this.

It's already been done, look for "Paperboy 128k": it includes a song, although no sound effects.

Had no idea it had been done. Will take a look!

I knew it was done, but I couldn't find it in any of the usual haunts.
That said, I didn't look very hard either but I must make more of an effort to do so.

The play area is too small really :(

Looks and plays excellent. I have never had any issues with the screensize on a real CPC. Do you mean that the playarea is so small that it makes the game too hard?

I guess I should try it via SCART on my 50" Panasonic plasma some day. I don't think I will need to zoom in to get a bigger picture there either  ;D

That actually never bothered me for a lot of games, although some games took the piss in that regard.
Crackdown tends to spring to mind, Xevious was another one. Slap Fight also... everything was tiny in that game, and the bullets flickered to the point where you'd blink and you'd miss them.

Yeah, Paperboy was OK by comparison. :D

I loved Paperboy in the arcade. The CPC version has much less road. I used to like driving in the road in the arcade and going over the jumps. So for me the area is a bit too small on the cpc.

It's the same as when you said you loved the kung fu master arcade and the cpc version didn't do it justice.

I never had a problem with Slap Fight and often played and enjoyed it.

Paperboy looks like a pretty good CPC conversion especially for it's age.  I was never a fan of the actual game though whether on CPC or Arcade or whatever.  Didn't find it much fun.  But technically yeah the CPC port seems pretty good for those that like the game.

Ah yeah. I just think for Elite's conversions at the time, Paperboy was a lot better than say the likes of Ghosts N Goblins. The playing area was small and there was bugger all road. Just saying it wasn't the worst game to be affected by small playing area.

NINJA WARRIORS! That's the one I was thinking of... now THAT was a small playing area!

concerning the play area,  if I remember correctly we used to play at 1meter from the screen... not worse than modern phones/tablets actually.

the saddest part is that a proper CPC engine could have used the full horizontal resolution... and still be somewhat playable.
Damn speccy ports, even in mode0 they may suck.

Ninja Warriors wasn't a speccy port I don't think. The wide screen effect was generated to replicate that the arcade version used three screens.

Ok let's compaire (sorry out of topic again, as always with me...)

CPC :
www.youtube.com/watch?v=wB7yy0iAfkk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wB7yy0iAfkk#)

speccy :
www.youtube.com/watch?v=H31uLhIZz20 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H31uLhIZz20#)

everything is the exact same size... as the speccy version uses masked sprites (, it allows the CPC version to actually not be too bad :
1bpp (graphics)+1bpp (mask) = 2bpp = quite equivalent to what can be done on CPC with sacrifice of one ink.

Not really a port but a crossdev, still CPC version have the stamp sized screen from the speccy.

Note how they put a coloured marker under player in order to get the game actually playable (or else you may not see your ninja mixed with other sprites, or both ninjas in co-op..., but on CPC as we have colours... there's no need.

I was quite fond of the red/yelllow space ship the player controls in Slap Fight (I even made a little Lego model of it back when I was a kid) and I was actually really disappointed when it turned out it only looks like that in the CPC version.   It's a really bland grey in the other versions including the original arcade game.   Yay for CPC colours!

Loved Paperboy. For some reason it has stayed with me...

But, did anyone ever manage to remember the exact position of actual subscribers from the diagram flashing for a second at the start of a level? I was always just throwing papers everywhere :D

Nah, unless I was able to count the amount of houses before or after a church...
