Title: Stone Age - a nice ST game that could be ported?
Post by: Gryzor on 10:10, 01 October 13
Here's an idea for a CPC title: Stone Age, from the Atari ST.

Attached the ST disk image.

What do you think?

Would make a nice Plus game.

Well, even a classic CPC one. Why Plus, except for the palette?

16x16 repetitive sprites.

The bricks and the floor tiles could be hardware sprites which are multiplexed.  The background could be MODE 0.

PLUS :
Mode1 and hardsprites... could look quite well.

Quote16x16 repetitive sprites.
the game display can be 20 tiles large... not sure it is possible to get all those in Hardsprites.

But a good mode1 with some tile patches and sprites, also multomode/raster for the HUD (score zone)...
Perhaps also a few sound samples.

Look at the size of the playground.

20x11 in 16x16 tiles.

So this does 320x176.

HUD (score zone) can clearly be in another mode.

QuoteDid You Know?

The Atari ST version ran on basically all Atari ST machines and configurations ever built and is using their specific technical opportunities like screen resolutions, colors and digital sound. This means this game is even running on monochrome monitors and the later 68030 machines. On Atari Falcon 030 and Atari TT machines the disk directly showed an harddisk installer program on desktop, which is invisible on the older Atari ST machines. On the TT the game also supports the ultra high monochrome mode of the TT (1280*960 pixels).- which makes Stone Age the only commercial game ever using this graphics mode.

Probably best to use MODE 0 for the tiles and use the sprites for the objects and player.

The plus palette will make the lack of resolution less apparent than the C64 version which also uses fat pixels.

I think this sort of game can really appreciate a good mode1.

Mode 1 is both overused and underused. (but is somewhat underhued... see what I did?)

Overused in failed monocolour speccy ports, underused in "well done" CGA/CPC.

A game like deflektor wouldn't work in Mode0 I guess.

Thanks for the ST/rest technical footnote, that was interesting indeed! Must try it in more configurations...

Just to actually have more than 4 colours per attribute is indeed enough to get something better than the C64 version...

even with normal CPC palette...

You can't multiplex the horizontally. And it would be a waste.

do-able provided you account for the limitation... in the level design.
