Title: Westward Ho!
Post by: Morn on 22:31, 07 December 11
I haven't been able to find the classic David Ahl BASIC games for the CPC, which is a shame of course. The C64 has them in spades, even the Speccy has them, why not the CPC? (Or at least they are not listed in any CPC game databases I've checked.)

So here's "Westward Ho! (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/Westward_Ho%21)", better known as "The Oregon Trail". Now I no longer need MESS and its Apple II emulation.  :)

Is it just me, or was anyone else expecting a different type of "Ho" ?  ::)

I've added the (slightly easier) 1975 version of Oregon Trail. It was rediscovered on an old HP Time-Shared BASIC tape this year...

Hello All,

I have found on a lost disk this summer "Kansas", a Basic program in french that uses the same background : a journey in the wild west with emigrants. It was not very well done and I suspect that it's a fast conversion from an older computer.

This one seems to be less repetitive and better done, that's a very good idea to have converted it ! Thanks !

Note : There is a little buggy in line 1180... And a country style music in the intro would be nice :-)

Hi Tom! (And Jerry!  :D )

Thanks for the bug report. That missing ":" is artifact of OCR-ing the code I'm afraid. I'll upload a fixed version of the DSK to the Wiki...

I agree, this should be enhanced with some asynchronously playing music in the background and/or intro. Unless you know someone to compose music for this, maybe I could try to convert a fitting PD MIDI tune to a format the Amstrad can play. I think I saw an RSX for background music in Amstrad Action or one of those mags a while ago. Have to look for it.

If you get permission, why not use 4-Mat's CarVup (Ingame 2). It's pretty "red-neck" in flavour!
STarkos player and the tune can easily sit between &8000-&A000 if you're not using that memory range.

Are you talking about this: http://192.33.98.12/ftp.modland.com/Protracker/4-Mat/carvup-2.mod (http://192.33.98.12/ftp.modland.com/Protracker/4-Mat/carvup-2.mod) Maybe sounds a bit too modern. I was thinking more along the lines of:  :D

But Starkos is certainly a good idea. Can it also import MIDI?

Is it just me or is the post preview currently not working BTW?

Or... any of Scott Joplin's tunes would do nicely!
There's tons of sheet-music online.

And no, you can't import MIDI straight into STarkos, you'd have to convert it! Anything from OpenMDT to OctaMED:SS is good enough to view MIDI files in 'tracker' format.

Of course ideally it would be several short pieces that accompany what's happening in the game (better opening fanfare/attack/death/fort/arrival in Oregon/generic background music). Its ever-changing music is the only good thing about Pirates! 2004.  ;)

Edit: P.S. Of course 'death' is the easiest one. The Funeral March by Chopin always works nicely. And Chopin composed it in 1837, so it even fits the game's time period...
