Title: What was the Best CPC Text Adventure with Graphics?
Post by: ComSoft6128 on 13:58, 07 February 20
Hi,

Having had a quick look on YT it doesn't seem to me that there aren't many videos which showcase the above genre so I'm thinking of making one or two of my own.
As the text component of this type of game would look similar on the C64, Spectrum or CPC I'd like to record a game that displays CPC screens at their best.

Any suggestions?

Done it again!, I should have been clearer and also stated "games from 1984 - 1995"

And now having looked I see this is available:

I think there are no really "good" graphics in that time in ANY text adventure, but Guild of Thieves was kind of nice  :D

The Pawn was quite ok as well, though I agree with SkulleateR, text adventures got beautiful graphics with the advent of 16-bitters, really...

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There are lots of great looking Amstrad graphical text adventures... but if you're turned off by line and fill, they might not be your thing.

I personally much prefer that style to bitmap graphics, especially poorly digitised bitmaps or scaled down 16-bit images/scans that several of the big name publishers went on to use. The results in some of the Rainbird games, for example, are very mixed. Saying that, Level 9 often used a Mode 0/Mode 1 split to good effect in games like Gnome Ranger and Ingrid's Back where they were a little more restrained and playing to the strengths of the platform.

Teoman Irmak's work for the UK Adventure International games, like Gremlins, is stylish and fun. I'm not a fan of the game side of the Ocean text adventures, but Hunchback etc. were graphically interesting.

Anything created with the GAC should have fairly interesting graphics, if you are a fan of line and fill, but there are other decent examples out there (both early and late).

The Spanish text adventure publishers often had great graphics... see games from Dinamic and Aventuras AD like Don Quijote, Jabato, La Aventura Espacial, La Diosa De Cozumel, etc.

Just a shame we couldn't see it all due to the bugs

I always loved the graphics from La Aventura Original, from Aventuras AD. I also think that the game is easily one of the best Spanish adventures, super charming and playable  :)

There's a new bitmap-graphics version in the works.

Yep! Actually, one thing I wanted to do was an English translation of the Amiga version with reworked graphics for the Amstrad. I was pretty confident that everything would fit. I was thinking about contacting Samudio and all, but then I saw that the version you mention was in the works and I abandoned the idea.

The team working on it are open to the idea of doing an English translation later on, too.

In "cepeceros", Chema just spoke about Le Maraudeur, https://www.cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&num=1354 (https://www.cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&num=1354)

Yesterday I was playing and it is actually "original", with movement using cursor keys, battles with dices, etc... It is French but there is an unofficial translated version in Spanish by @MiguelSky (https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=14) , I did not find  it in English though.., but maybe it exists.

Black Land was free. It was the penultimate game by the bollaware team, the last one was Fres Fighter 2. It's 4-sided game, really ambitious, maybe too much.

Actually not. It was free years later, but I bought mine an a great box with great stuff inside. And of course in German. English come later - and like usually lots of great spirit, atmosphere and lyrics get lot when translating something from German into some other language. Nevertheless they did the huge job to make an English version too.
