Title: Anywhere to buy disk games?
Post by: Dr Tiger Ninestein on 15:40, 18 August 15
Ive just managed to get hold of a 6128 plus with colour monitor in great condition but have no games on disk to play.

Ebay doesn't seem to many disks at all so does anyone know of any other website that sell them?

Well.... If I were you I'd get an hxc drive and fit an Abba switch. Then the games archives at cpc-power can be used.

...or a Gotek, now that it's an option and the HxC's price was raised.

Yeah I had thought about an hxc but to be honest with you my computer/tech skills are pretty much non existent and I doubt very much I'd be able to get it connected and working. I didn't even know an abba switch was required and after googling it I still have no idea of what it is needed for :-[

You can connect an HxC the same way as floppy as B-drive. :)

And the Abba switch swaps the 2 drives over so software that will only run from drive A: will work with the hxc. Abba (A is B and B is A)

Will shorting pins 11/12 on the data cable after Amstrad power on will work with hxc as a "poor's man abba switch"?

The hxc has jumpers to set the drive. The problem is disabling the internal drive.

Well, just put no disc in A ;-)

They told it works, never tried it in person.

Not providing the 12V power supply to the internal drive is not enough to disable it?

That'll stop the motor. But the drive is still present, and continuously reports read errors as a result.

Ok so now I'm confused, what software won't work from drive B?

A large majority of commercial games don't.

You can buy some modified cable over Ebay if you're not into soldering.

Ah ok, so an abba switch is a must then.

Highly recommended! Put it this way, all but 2 of my cpc's have one. And of those, one is my spare and the other will be going to @Bryce at some point for an upgrade...   Including an Abba!

I got not a single ABBA switch in one of my CPC (just don't want to scratch routes on the PCB). The majority of all programs can be patched for B / or is already patched to work from B. And anything else... well 3" is a nice format.  :) [nb]That doesn't mean that I wouldn't take a CPC with ABBA switch.[/nb]
