Title: Cases for discs for a physical release
Post by: eto on 12:16, 05 January 21
I have finished a small game and would like to do my personal physical "release" for it. So I am now looking for the right packaging for it. I thought about the transparent boxes which many releases had, similar to jewel cases (see screenshot attached of something similar I found on Ebay). Unfortunately I don't seem to find these kind of boxes anywhere.

Any ideas what could come close? What do publishers use today, when they do a physical release of a game?

The jewel cases that pre-recorded Audio MiniDiscs came in are exactly the same size as a 3in disc if you remove the Disc holding plastic inside. Maybe these are easier to find?

Bryce.

I didn't know about the MDs! Imagine that :D

Of course any old jewel case would do if it lacks its usual CD-accommodating tray.

Unfortunately not. Cases for MiniDiscs can be found, but only for self recorded media and they are too small.

I tried CD cases but they won't work. If you remove the tray, they are partially open. I didn't find anything else that somehow could be a fit.

Something like this but remove the spikes to hold the cassette in place

Hm, I know what you mean, do all CD cases with a tray have that lip that fills the gap you mention?

I will try such a double tape box. That could be the size that physical releases had.

I will let you know how it works.

It's exactly the same size. I have many games in that format in both Disk and tape and the boxes are the same size, if not the same box.
New games like Cyber Chicken also came in that type of box.

It has no pins, so you can actually put whatever you want inside :)

I did just check my shelves and i see that Clevermind, Pinball Dreams, Dead on Time, Relentless and so also used this kind of box and the size are exactly the same as old releases in tape or disk.

Attached you can find some photos of one of those cases on top of an Epyx Disk game. As you can see, it's exactly the same size :)

I mean, I've handled so many you'd think I'd have noticed...

This is for clear double cassette cases without lugs, so you could put either cassettes or a disc in it.

Double Cassette Box, 2 Side by Side, Clear/Clear, No Lugs - Cassette Boxes (Norelcos) - Audio Cassettes - duplication.ca (Analogue Media Technologies Inc.) (https://www.duplication.ca/double-cassette-box-2-side-by-side-clear-clear-no-lugs.html)

I'm curious, do you have a supplier for new blank discs?

No unfortunately not. In the meantime I bought cassette boxes. They are relatively cheap, even in small quantities (5 pieces for 10€ incl. shipping, or 20 for 30€) and they have the nostalgia factor. I also tried a case for a Switch cartridge. That would also be a good fit for a 3" disc and would look great but I prefer the vintage look of the cassette case.

I have no supplier for discs but I have a few spare discs, so I can make my own version at least ;-)

I had the same problem. Asked many sellers, most wanted minimum order of some .... thousands pieces.
I then chose a paper box, it is more high than I wanted (6 cm) but it was what fitted best and looked nice.
Of course it is an amateur option, but at least it looks good in my opinion.

I actually really like the look of the paper boxes. As we're pretty much all collectors here, we will look after them so they won't get all crushed like Nintendo boxes! Plus, it's a bit more environmentally friendly than single-use plastic too.

For Defence I used clear DVD-Boxes without inlay:

The 3" disk and the soundtrack where in something like this:

And these covers where sticked into the boxes using:
