Title: CDT or DSK
Post by: pete99 on 11:43, 29 October 15
Hi guys

Was just wondering if there is any advantages (or disadvantages) for either disc or tape. I'm limited to emulation by the way.

regards Pete

Advantages of DSK:

1. It's really, really fast compared to tapes.
2. You can see all saved files at once.
3. It's easier to delete, rename, copy, etc files.
4. It just makes everything simpler to deal with.

Advantages of CDT:

1. No limit on data - you can save as much as you want.
2. You can put it on your phone/mp3 player and stream it into the tape deck using a line out-to-cassette system (usually to hook a CD player up to a car but really useful here, too).

Hi Zoe

Thanks for the info, I had not thought of the extra data part of the CDT.

I may stand corrected, though at the moment no emulator can produce a CDT file directly, for that you need a 3rd party program like 2CDT to make a CDT. What the Emulator can do is produce a WAV (Winape) or CSW (CPCE) file. Earlier I made a Speed Load version of Jet-Boot Jack (http://www.cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&num=1201) using Tools & a bit of compression to get the game loaded quicker, for the speed load bit, I was pushing the Baud Rate up to 3968, which might of been a bit harder to load had I been loading from Cassette, but managed fine from CDT media, I have to test some new values, though I may even be able to extend the Baud Rate, unsure because I was feeding values which forced the emulator to cancel the save, when I was playing around with this earlier.

A CPC 464 can support up to 6500 bauds hehehe :)

I did some tests with CNGSOFT, and a game like Turrican 2 can load from start to title menu in compact format in betwen 55s and 1mn05.

Incredibly fast.

Didn't Ralf break that record with his "Breaking Baud" demo?

I presume if it was using OTLA set to 12600 as @Token (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1077) states in their post (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/games/cdt-tape-files-from-otla-(turbo)/msg81625/#msg81625), would that be Breaking Baud speed?

Just a little bit confused what the circumstances are with regard to what Baud Rate is being used in relation to Hardware/Trickery. The game I mentioned previously was using a fast standard baud rate (3968) with some Headerless Files (to make it load quicker), the files were also compressed, all I needed to do was uncompress them as I was progressively loading each file for the game. I was also loading it digitally which I think helps, when compared to loading from the good old tape.
