Title: Computer desk
Post by: steve on 16:58, 06 March 12
At some point in the CPC history, Amstrad started selling a bundle containing the '464 with colour monitor, an mp3 tuner, clock radio and a computer desk.
Does anyone have one of these desks and could they document it for the Wiki please?
Perhaps include full dimensions so we might build our own replica since these desks are unlikely to ever be found on ebay.

PS, It probably included software and a joystick as well, maybe even a printer.

Not exactly that. But there was another kind of tower too.

It was a Radio & Clock level, and a TV-tuner level. On top of the two levels you put your CTM644 monitor. I saw pics of that in the net at least.

There was one of those desks on ebay UK recently. But I doubt we will want to reproduce it, it looked shit :D

I own that in my collection. Still working since nearly 20 years now. The Radio Clock is working fine and the tv-tuner need to be feed with a DVB-T Modulator but it works.

TFM, no, there was a desk bundle as well. But, like Bryce says and IIRC it wasn't anything special at all... just some random desk from some random manufacturer.

Still, it'd be good to have a photo for archival reasons!

Egad! It's simpler than I thought it was. They also gave away the joystick with it - obviously they still had stock left :D

And they were still giving the same old games...

Yes, it falls into the "Swedish discount furniture" catagory.

The simple design makes it easier for anyone to build a copy to complete their collection.
I do not think it is ugly, it is functional and will disappear entirely when you are sitting at it.

Thank you Bryce for putting up the picture.
I am surprised there was one on ebay, people won't even ship monitors so a cheap desk was even less likely to be sent out.

It may have been for collection only. Eitherway, as my father wisely says: If it's made of chipboard it's not furniture.

I wouldn't mind ugliness or cheapiness, what would sell me would be a desk custom-designed for the CPC and peripherals. And, for god's sake, why not stick a nice log on it?

How about just putting a few logs under it and setting the whole thing alight? :D

Wouldn't be too pretty for ebay then...

Well they could claim it was a "Fire Sale" :D

But seriously, it really is a terrible design, which I doubt was done specifically for the CPC. Notice that the cables from the monitor to the CPC are convientiently missing? Now just image how they would look stretched across the front of the tuner, which also makes it impossible to slide the keyboard under the monitor.

If I remember correctly the keyboard shelf is deeper than the monitor shelf and it is fixed in position so the cables reach up to the monitor, but as you say it does not look very good but that cannot be helped.

I still have both of them in the original packaging (and a second set working)

To make fun out of this, once I also added the Vidi-CPC Video-Digitizer ;-) So I had my personal Video-Studio  :D

Quite funny had the same effect here agian. Your pic 292 KB, fgbrains pic 64 KB. Well, the deep sea cable to usa must have a data leak deep down there ;-)

Well it's probably routed through some U.S. Spy agency first, so that would slow it down a bit. :D

Yeah, probably! And since they got no idea what we talking about it all takes even longer.
