Title: Greetings, Programs!
Post by: FruityFrank on 12:43, 01 December 19
Hello there,

just some short introduction.

I'm Frank from germany, 44yo. Like many others I got my 464 in the mid 80s when I was around 10 or 11 yo. It was my first computer and back then I only learned how to copy and start the games that were traded on the schoolyard. Because of my limited english skills I didn't understand most games. One exception was a game called "Thrust" that I played for days and weeks. But I didn't stay interested for long and eventually my main interest went over to Hifi....
In the early 90s I got in touch with computers again and bought my first PC, just in time for the first 3d-shooters. Hence I was lost in Doom, Duke and System-Shock ... and Hifi was pushed aside eventually (which become more of a snake-oil fest anyway ...).

But I never forgot about my CPC roots during these years but it took a while until I realized that I'm sort of a "stuck in the 80s" guy and want to give my trusty 8 bitter (and some left over Hifi stuff) more room and more time.

Now I'm looking around the local used market for 80s computers and bought several CPC6128, a memory extension (Doppertin), color screen, lots of diskettes, tapes, books ... even a mouse and a trackball and a scanner-device that can be hooked to a printer. I bought other computers as well like C64, a rare SX64 and a Philips MSX. But I'm really only linked to the CPC ...

Few years back I got rid of all CRTs, old Floppy drives and cables from my PCs and now I'm looking again for that stuff. Feels stupid, but thats the way it is.

Back in the 90s I was amazed by the PC Demoscene (Future Crew et al.)and loved watching that stuff and now I'm complete flashed by looking at CPC-demos from BatmanGroup. Never thought this was possible. I played hours of Pinball Dreams and waiting for the racing-game from BG ...

Call me addicted :)

Welcome to the forum...
I was interested to hear about your computing experiences, I too grew up with the CPC, but I moved over to the NES and PC 1512 in the early 90's

That's a fantastic picture! it sounds like you have a great range of machines there... the scanner device sounds quite interesting... I've heard vaguely about something like that before, but I've never seen one.

The Demoscene was something I'd only vaguely heard of in the 90's but it seems to have really blown up over the last 5-10 years, with amazing stuff like the Batman Forever demo and Imperial Mahjong delivering things that seemed completely impossible!

Hope you have fun once again with the CPC!

Thanks keith56.

my parents kept me away from consoles which, in hinsight I find is a bit of a shame, because of there rich retroscene that I cannot be part of ...
The scanner-device is just some simple photodiode that goes piggyback on the head of a stylus printer :) I don't know if it still works and what software it supports.
I see you have assembler tutorials. This is great because I'm eager to learn it. It irks me that I don't have a clue whats going on inside that maschine. I had some x86 assembler back in school (25 years ago) and later studied computer science. But there I learned more the typical high level languages. Maybe an old 8-bit maschine can be great for education of that low-level magic.

Willkommen!

You have a very nice setup.

I'm glad to see another System Shock fan  :D

And yes, collecting retro hardware is an addiction. I stopped when I had no more room to store all the stuff at home and moved to another country... Good thing my company paid for the moving.

Cheers,
Rob

Hello and welcome!  :)

There is a System Shock for the CPC too. It's called Orion Prime. And yes, you can get it in German too.  :)

Thanks mate :) its not finished ... today I found a 21" Trinitron TV for free. It works fine and will replace the CTM. Bigger is better :) I want to make the room look more 80s and Arcade style as well. Plasmaball and Rubik-Cube comes to mind. Maybe some dekorative Neon signs? will see ... I really enjoy doing this.
