Title: Just joining the party
Post by: gareth.myles on 11:40, 29 November 15
Hi

Been a fan for a lot of years always had a piece of Amstrad hardware somewhere about the house.

I have the while collection now a 464, 464+, 664, 6128, 6128+ and a GX4000. All in full working order.

I also have three monitors however annoyingly a speaker has gone in the newer white variant and as the sound is stereo I'm missing half the sound effects. Does anyone have any advice on changing it. I think I would probably fry myself.

Looking forward to being part of the community.

Gareth

Welcome! Well if only one speaker is broken then you could first check if the speaker itself is bad or if the cable to the speaker is broken. However when opening the CTM11 or 14 be very careful not to get electrocuted, the keep a high voltage for days after being switched off.

Maybe the plug of the monitor cable to the computer has a problem. Try cleaning with Iso-Propanol. Look for cold solder spots.

Good luck!

Thanks for the welcome .I will be digging into the CTM this weekend to see if I can identify the problem .it hasn't been plugged in for weeks. If you don't hear from me again then it might not have gone terribly well. Then again if you do it might be a haunting of the board.

If someone who was going to work on a monitor left it unplugged for a week or two before opening it, they should be fine, yes?

No, you MUST NOT leave anything to chance. The caps MUST be discharged regardless of how long you think a TV/monitor has been off for.

The work of 2 minutes versus a hospital visit/death. Which do you choose?

Is there a manual or guide available for all of this? I don't recall seeing one.

There are Service Manuals on the Wiki, which include useful info for Monitors for people who can repair TVs.
