Title: new to cpc
Post by: jamie on 21:55, 04 September 15
Hello all.

Been into the C64 scene for a good few years now and have moved on/or changed to a 464plus. I am interested in modern physical release cpc games to buy. In the C64 world we have Psytronik. What does Amstrad have? Just bought a new release game from Spain..

Always interested in modern hardware for old computers .

Welcome Jamie.

On the Psytronik website, you can found some CPC games released by Axelay.
Most of the lasted games (Orion Prime, R-Type, Cyber Chicken, ...) are sold out. But you can download them from cpc-power for example.

PS: Don't forget to register to have a real account. (not guest)

I'm a newbie too, but I know some publishers release Amstrad games every now and then. I don't know any specialised publisher that keeps some stock and all (like RGCD does for the C64, for example).

Some examples from the top of my head:
I don't know if there's a wiki page with all this information, or is just me that I can't find it!

Thanks people
To be honest I am not all that impressed so far with the 464. I have played a few c64 ports and they look and play horrible on cpc. I have tried Silkworm and a couple of others..

Hmmmm. Not sure comments like that are fair. Try some of the CPC exclusives in the latest chinnyvision video. Or the likes of subhunter and dead on time. Better yet, go to 128k and get your mind blown by the awesome r-type remake or turrican2.

Can you reccomend some good cpc exclusives? Shame because I bought a nice enough 464 plus and invested in a scart and psu pack.

Could you also reccomend me to a decent and cheapish device where I can store games? Usb or sd type solution?

If you have a 464 plus then the 128k expansion and disc interface can be fitted internally, speak to @Bryce for details. This way an hxc, gotek or floppy drive can be added easily to address high speed storage. And compared to the c64, Amstrad floppy drives are seriously fast.

How much would this upgrade cost me?

Well, you can be pretty sure that they are not C64 ports but Spectrum ports

Then play original CPC titles, and you won't like the c64 conversions any longer.

you may not find the console like scrollers as on C64...
But more European computer flavored games indeed.

some games are somewhat ported from c64 concerning graphics... most palace software games or Raffaele Cecco games are ported graphically from the C64. Quite often, the palette port is not as good as it should.
But more games were infamous (yet sometimes good) speccy ports due to shared architecture (Z80) between the 2 machines.

Some games are just good on every machines anyway (Barbarian...)

Dan Dare III is fun : speccy engine with C64 graphics and Amstrad CPC cartoonish palette.
AMC is also quite great on CPC, those "character based" engines are not the smootest but can quite get nice playing.

Try Head over heels perhaps.

Also some French games are quite impressive.

That's what a lot of us thinks too.

The CPC was seriously neglected back then. Developers only had very limited time to create ports. Doesn't take a genius to figure out what the result of that will be. Classic money machine in action, and those are always disappointing for the consumer.

It's not that the CPC isn't capable. It can do fantastic amazing things. Just look at original CPC titles and newer releases too.

Play Chase HQ on C64, then play Chase HQ on CPC.  The CPC will suddenly feel like a PS4 in comparison  (ok, exaggerating but hey sometimes the CPC got by far the better port out of the two).

I like Silkworm!! But it was released prior to a Plus, so it's not fair to compare Hardware Sprites to Software Sprite.

I saw that too. *such* a shame. Although I hope the reason behind that is to get a 6128 (either CPC or plus) and the to experience some real CPC games. I doubt it tho, probably gone back to the world of brown.

It's all c64 sucker strategy in three steps:

- Buy cheap / steal / find / get donated a CPC464
- Bitch at it
- Sell it expensive

Then it repeats again, because somebody stupid gives them another 464.

I suspect you're right. Love to be proven wrong tho. Although I never has a c64, or any friends with one, my immediate group of friends had CPC 6128's (I had a 464) or BBC B's I envied them all :( I wanted to be free of tapes lol.
So although I never had a c64 I can appreciate some excellent games on it. The Bruce Lee remake puts the CPC version to shame, and the ghosts and goblins arcade... Wow... Just wow. I thought we had grown up from this 8 bit pettiness. [emoji20]
