Title: Newbie to the forum
Post by: Baggers on 10:23, 03 September 12
Hi All,

I just wanted to say Hi, and that you have what looks like a great forum here.

Just out of curiosity, what hardware and software do you use to convert floppy disks to PC .DSK files?

Cheers,
Jim.

Hi baggers,
and welcome to the forum. To get the files over to the PC I use a 3.5in drive connected to the CPC. Then I use ManageDSK to convert it to a DSK image: ManageDsk - CPCWiki (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/ManageDsk)

Bryce.

Hello Baggers and welcome,

Bryce's solution is the simplest one, I guess, as long as you have a 3.5" drive for your CPC.

I wonder if someone could write a program like ManageDSK, but for the CPC - like there are MSA creators for the ST. Then you could store them DSK files on an SD (if you got an HxC of course)...

If this is too much for you, I bet someone could help you out if you sent them the disks!

Thanks for the welcomes guys,

Yeah, it seems I'll have to get a 3.5" drive for the CPC :)

It would be nice to get some of my old stuff across to the PC for safe keeping, as I don't know how much life will be left in the old floppies!

Cheers for the info!
Jim.

It's been a while since I've coded anything on the CPC, I am tempted to get back on it, I'm just finishing writing a couple of arcade games, then may have a look at doing something on the Amstrad again, after all these years! :D

Hey, this post went totally unnoticed!!! What platform are you developing now on? Can't wait to see if you come up with something on the CPC :) I'm sure you can find all the help you may need here...

I've met Baggers before. He came to Sumo a few months back. I am the Tools/Editor guy.

Hint: He's done a lot of good cpc games in mode 1.

Hi all, ( and arnoldemu )

Thanks for the welcome guys,

And yes, I've done a few CPC games back in the day, and due to small timescales, they were done as spectrum clones, in mode 1, sorry :D I should have done them in Mode 2, but as I wrote the spectrum versions, which were different to the C64, Midnight Resistance for example, has the Jeep at the beginning, and all the cut scenes were in it too, and all the baddies, so it was easier to use upgraded spectrum graphics, if we'd have had more time, I'd have got the artist to re-do them in 16 colours :D

I'm currently working on an iOS game or two.

I have also just finished ( although you probably won't want to know this haha ) PacManicMinerMan and JetPacMan for the PacMan Arcade Hardware.

I'm thinking of doing DropZone for CPC, when I next get some spare time, what do you guys recon? worthy of doing? ( in mode 2 of course lol )

Perhaps there is some confusion here.

Mode 2 is the most colourful mode on the BBC.
Mode 0 is the most colourful mode on the CPC.

It'll be mode 0 on the cpc ;)

Mode 2 is fairly underestimated on the CPC... I should make a game using it.

Sure, you should.
But, nobody make a descent game with Mode 2 in 25 years. (greats PCW use)

Ok, I may be wrong. But I remember some great Mode 2 games from Bollware. Check it out.

Yeah, mode 0, but yeah Could do it mode 2, but I think mode 0 would be better :D
Mode 2 would look nice though! :D lol

Mode 2 is superb indeed, I bet a talented artist could do wonders with shading and stuff. A real challenge though...

Heck, we don't even have many mode 2 art screens to begin with!

That's sad but true...

EDIT: Guess I made some relative 'easy' conversions from PC. However some look nice... see here:

I've not coded for PCW in years, since 87, wrote some map editors/screen converters, but I think I'll be doing CPC only, and now PCW, two reasons.
1. I don't have one any more.
and
2. I don't have an emulator.
