Hi there, Im wondering what I should be looking for when it comes to a power supply in australia for an amstrad cpc 464, Managed to get one however it was without power supply and yeah.
I wasnt 100% on what I should be looking for and didnt see much when it came to amstrads and using with australian sockets. Thanks :)
Any normal 5V PSU will work, but it'll need to be plugged in upside down! :D
Although, in all seriousness...
Make sure you get the polarity right, or you'll kill the CPC. Make sure the voltage isn't too high, or you'll kill the CPC, and so make sure it's a good quality regulated and smoothed 5V supply.
Suggesting a 5 V PSU with at least 2 A, better 3 A in case you will work with expansions at the expansion port. You can get any PSU for LED chains, but be careful to use a 'balanced' one, no switching PSU.
Any 5v 3A plugpack will work; even a USB charger will if you have the right adapter. Jaycar has plenty but they all have switchable polarity plugs; there's a big risk you'll get it wrong at some point and blow your 464 up so I can't recommend them. If you get one with a fixed DC output plug, it's 99% certain it will be correctly centre-positive.
My comment that I always make on these threads: if you start running expansions and find you have stability issues, there's no point upgrading to a PSU above 2A. You need a 5.1V or 5.2V supply instead.
Here's a decent one in Queensland. Choose the 5A version. The connector is the correct type / polarity for a 464 and it has enough power to allow multiple expansions.

That's what Bryce has recommended. You don't need the extra adapter.
If you don't intend to use any expansions, the 5V 2A type should be fine as well.
An unexpanded CPC 464 is rated at 2A at 5V (or 10W).

Sweet, ordered it now, I intend to use a floppy drive with it eventually, However right now i have no accessories, grabbed the 5v 5a one. Cant wait to test this out :)

I always compensate for over ambitious power claims on PSU's. Many (claimed to be) 5V 2A PSU's will drop to almost 4V when you actually put a 2A load on them, so the 5A PSU is a safer bet. However, the manufacturer in this case is a well known brand that is honest when it comes to their specs.

Well, I just can confirm that from my various setups. It's always a good thing to have some "spare" Amps, because even a drop to 4,5 Volt will cause serious troubles (you start debugging, but it's not the hardware, not the software, just the PSU!!!).
My suggestion: Get a Y cable and measure the Volts at a time everything is switched on and running.
The other's will probably kill me but I often use something like this https://www.amazon.com.au/Easyday-Barrel-Charger-Adapter-Connector/dp/B07M9B54N7 with a good usb charger.
If it's a decent USB charger from a reputable maker (Asus, Samsung etc) and it can supply enough amps, then there's not really a huge problem with doing that.
