Title: Dual Floppy Drive Set
Post by: Vyper68 on 18:43, 08 January 18
I know we are hopping over the fence on this post but Amstrad bought Sinclair out so i think we're OK. There is a guy going by the name of ByteDelight and he has a Dual Floppy drive for sale i haven't put a link to his site as i don't want to break forum rules -  it is Shugart compatible but has an IDC connector. If that were changed to an edge connector do you think it would work with a CPC6128???

They are standard 3.5in Shugart floppy drives. It could be connected to the CPC's floppy port, but only one drive would work (as B:).

Are there only a maximum of two drives on CPC's then - could you disable the the 3"drive and have those as A & B and feed the cable inside the CPC6128 case to the IDC on the Board???

Without internal CPC hacking the limit is two. Also, the port at the back only has the DS1 signal connected, so only one drive can be connected externally (without modding the CPC).

What about thoughts on bypassing the 3" internal drive altogether and connecting the Dual drive to the IDC on the motherboard would that work in theory?

Yes, I have done this mod to plus machines in the past. On the 464+ from @CraigsBar (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=482)  I upgraded it to 6128 but left the tapedeck inside and rerouted DS0 to the rear socket so that two drives could be connected externally.
On a 6128 with internal drive it could be possible to add a switch between A: as the internal or as a second external drive.
