I have recently acquired a 6128 with a CRTC 2 in it. What are my options for changing that out to a CRTC 1 chip? Could I just buy the chip, drop it in and go?

Don't see why not. I had a dead CRTC in a 664, swapped with a CRTC 2 as this is all I could get my hands.

Install a socket and then you can drop in a CRTC 1 chip no issue
